Manufacturing Field Technician (License Plates)
About the Role
Our GovTech client is seeking a hands-on License Plate Technician to support the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of specialized manufacturing equipment used to produce license plates, vehicle registrations, and related DMV materials. This is a manufacturing-focused field service role ideal for someone with strong mechanical aptitude who enjoys diagnosing equipment issues, performing preventative maintenance, improving manufacturing processes, and traveling to customer sites for installations and repairs.
This position combines time in the Fort Wayne office supporting customers and coordinating repairs with project-based travel to government production facilities and correctional institutions across multiple states. You'll work closely with Operations, Customer Support, and Fulfillment teams to minimize equipment downtime and ensure critical government production operations continue running efficiently.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, install, and maintain industrial production equipment, including license plate printers, manufacturing presses, blanking lines, and mail insert equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance to maximize equipment uptime and reduce production downtime.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, software, and basic network connectivity issues on production equipment.
- Support customers remotely from the Fort Wayne office while serving as a technical escalation point for complex equipment issues.
- Travel to customer sites for equipment installations, repairs, preventative maintenance, and implementation projects.
- Order replacement parts, coordinate repairs, and maintain equipment inventory as needed.
- Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing processes, equipment reliability, and production efficiency.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, maintenance records, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Collaborate with Fulfillment, Customer Support, Business Analysts, and Operations teams on equipment upgrades and new projects.
Minimum Requirements
- 3+ years of hands-on experience repairing industrial equipment, manufacturing machinery, or electromechanical systems.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with experience diagnosing and repairing production equipment independently.
- Experience performing preventative maintenance on industrial or manufacturing equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work directly with customers and cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to lift up to 70 pounds and work in manufacturing environments.
- Comfortable traveling for project work and working inside correctional facilities.
- Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen.
Preferred Qualifications
- Field Service Technician, Industrial Maintenance, Heavy Equipment, Mechatronics, or Military mechanical maintenance background.
- Experience working with industrial printers, manufacturing presses, packaging equipment, or other production machinery.
- Hydraulics or electromechanical troubleshooting experience.
- Experience ordering replacement parts and managing equipment inventory.
- Experience identifying and implementing manufacturing process improvements.
- Basic networking knowledge, including IP addressing, VPN connectivity, and network troubleshooting.
- Experience working directly with customers in a field service environment.
Travel
- Approximately one trip per month to customer sites in Kentucky (typically 4-day installations).
- Approximately two trips per year to South Dakota (4-5 days).
- Additional project-based travel throughout the year, which may require Monday-Friday travel for multiple consecutive weeks depending on installation schedules (weekends at home).
- All business travel is reimbursed, including lodging and up to $75/day for meals while traveling.
