Manufacturing Engineer - Team Lead

About the role

This role combines strategic leadership with hands-on execution, overseeing the day-to-day operations and long-term direction of the Manufacturing Engineering team, with a particular focus on Contract Manufacturing. The successful candidate will lead and mentor a team of engineers, fostering a high-performance culture while actively driving key initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of manufacturing engineers in daily operations and strategic initiatives.
  • Cross-functionally coordinate with multiple groups to facilitate the transition of new products from prototype into production, including R&D, Operations, Safety, Quality, Sourcing, PMO, Sales, and Executive Leadership.
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives (Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen).
  • Support new product introductions by ensuring manufacturability and scalability.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to efficiency, downtime, yield, etc.
  • Manage documentation including work instructions, process flows, PFMEAs, and control plans.
  • Provide technical training and development to engineers and production staff.
  • Manage CAPEX planning and implementation of new equipment or facility upgrades.
  • Develop and improve manufacturing methods, utilizing knowledge of product design, materials and parts, fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment capabilities.
  • Evaluate and improve assembly methods and quality standards through process evaluation and the use of engineering and quality principles and tools.
  • Plan work force utilization, space requirements and workflow.
  • Design layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency and continue evaluating layout designs as parts are changed and added to promote continuous process and product improvements and to eliminate waste.
  • Confer with planning and design staff concerning product design and tooling to ensure efficient production methods.
  • Confer with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials, or parts.
  • Aid in the development of a supplier quality program.
  • Work with customers to develop part and product quality requirements.
  • Perform cost estimates, production time estimates, staffing requirements, and related costs to provide information for management decisions.
  • Collaborate with management, engineering, sales, and manufacturing staff to develop manufacturing capabilities, schedules, and processes to facilitate production.
  • Apply statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and potential.
  • Research and evaluate data such as customer design proposals and specifications to ensure manufacturing processes are capable and compatible with customer expectations/requirements.
  • Establish part costing and routings.
  • Work with manufacturing and product engineering in developing manufacturing standards.
  • Identify and flow chart all manufacturing processes.
  • Provide a leading role in the development of a quality system.
  • Provide assistance in new product development and process design and implementation for new products.
  • Work with manufacturing customers in developing part quotes for contract manufacturing.
  • Provide necessary leadership in identifying and recording continuous improvement efforts and ensuring that those efforts are tracked and recorded.
  • Establish an effective corrective action program.
  • Assist the HR department in job analysis and job description development.
  • Identify job areas that require special training and make recommendations as to those training resources.
  • Make recommendations for recruitment/position vacancies as required.
  • Provide assistance/guidance in developing an effective engineering change system.
  • Provide assistance as required in developing an effective maintenance management program.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Maintain personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • A four-year degree in engineering, manufacturing, business or related field.
  • Minimum of six years of manufacturing/engineering experience in an agile/lean/JIT or DFT environment.
  • Technical/management experience in plant maintenance operations in a manufacturing environment with a focus on machine capability and process capability studies.
  • Problem-solving skills in 8-D, FMEA, Taguchi methods (statistical approach), Cause-and-Effect analysis, flowcharting techniques, pareto analysis, root cause analysis, proact training.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Purchasing and material management experience.
  • Time study methods and standards methodology (Industrial Engineering) experience.
  • Experience in manufacturing quality programs, i.e., ISO, TQM, or Six Sigma. Quality engineer, reliability engineer, or quality manager certification is desirable.
  • Product/Process Design experience.
  • Cost analysis/BOM experience and ability to read and understand business financial statements helpful.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA and EPA requirements governing manufacturing facilities.
  • Knowledge of CAD design programs.
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Project management experience and time management skills.
  • Team building skills.
  • Understanding of equipment and process verification and validation.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects/tasks and work independently or as a member of a team.

Qualifications
