About the role
The Manufacturing Engineering Intern will support manufacturing engineering initiatives with a primary focus on launching and standardizing a 5S workplace organization program in a new manufacturing facility. This role reports to the Senior Manufacturing Engineer.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate leadership in implementing a 5S program through time studies and lean improvements.
- Conduct and analyze workplace assessments and audits to identify and address organizational, flow, and visual management issues.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and operations teams to develop and implement standard work and visual controls.
- Facilitate 5S events to drive engagement and adoption across the production floor.
- Support the development of sustainment systems, including audit checklists, scoring methods, and accountability processes.
- Assist with layout planning and workflow optimization in a growing manufacturing environment.
- Collect and analyze data to measure the impact of improvements and identify additional opportunities.
- Develop and maintain documentation including standard operating procedures (SOPs), visual aids, and training materials.
- Present project updates, findings, and results to engineering and operations leadership.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- Junior or Senior standing preferred.
- Experience managing projects, timelines, and deliverables.
- Exposure to or certification in Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma (Green Belt preferred or in progress).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with data analysis tools (e.g., Power BI) is a plus.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for floor layout and process optimization is a plus.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work cross-functionally with operations teams.
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage and drive project work independently.
- Interest in hands-on manufacturing environments and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Gain hands-on experience in lean manufacturing and 5S implementation.
- Develop skills in data analysis, process improvement, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Exposure to real-world manufacturing operations in a growing facility.
Skills
- Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma (Green Belt preferred or in progress).
