About the role
The Manufacturing Engineer will work at RTX, a leader in aerospace and defense, in the West Des Moines, IA facility. The role involves optimizing manufacturing processes, improving product quality, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to solve technical challenges.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate and resolve non-conforming product issues as a Material Review Board (MRB) member.
- Minimize the Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) for assigned product lines.
- Define and solve technical problems in manufacturing, assembly, and testing environments.
- Implement cost-saving and process improvement initiatives on assigned product lines.
- Collaborate with design engineering teams to enhance manufacturability of products.
- Develop efficient production workflows and determine optimal sequencing of operations.
- Prepare cost estimates for proposed projects and analyze cost factors.
- Support facility layouts for manufacturing processes and equipment as needed.
- Solve manufacturing challenges of varying complexity.
- Design tools, fixtures, and gauges using SolidWorks to improve manufacturing processes and address safety concerns.
- Create detailed assembly work instructions using Microsoft Excel and Word (experience with SolidWorks Composer is a plus).
- Program laser markers and develop operator instructions for laser marking processes.
- Utilize RTX-Lifecycle-Program-Management (RLPM) for New Product Introduction projects (NPI) to develop build plans for new fuel nozzle designs.
- Develop and maintain production routings and bill of materials.
- Work with suppliers to resolve quality and technical issues.
- Conduct compliance reviews to ensure conformance with customer specifications and requirements.
Qualifications
- Typically requires a University Degree and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field.
- Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in engineering (manufacturing, operations, aerospace, mechanical, industrial, or a related field).
- Strong understanding of lean manufacturing principles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience with MS Project is a plus.
- Hands-on experience in machining, assembly, fixture design, tooling design, and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Familiarity with special processes such as vacuum brazing, heat treating, TIG/laser welding, and EDM.
