Manufacturing Engineer

We help customers with forged solutions for global infrastructure, energy, transportation, manufacturing, mining, and national defense. From NASA’s Mars Rover components to mission-critical parts for nuclear submarines and large hydraulic cylinders for mining trucks, Scot Forge creates precision forged metal parts for demanding applications worldwide.

As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will develop, implement, and maintain methods, processes, and costs in support of Scot Forge customers and employee-owners. You will collaborate closely with department supervisors and other departments in an environment focused on continuous improvement, lean principles, and best practices. The role involves recommending and implementing improvements in operations, work instructions, equipment utilization, and related areas to enhance safety, quality, processes, and cost efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Support manufacturing with a disciplined approach to problem-solving (e.g., fishbone diagrams, 6S, value stream mapping, job safety analysis) in program launches, rework, and continuous improvement.
• Provide effective leadership by constructively challenging processes, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and modeling best practices.
• Utilize knowledge of process capabilities and control limits to improve quality and assess incoming work.
• Support and document continuous improvement opportunities to reduce cycle times, scrap, and waste.
• Develop financial justifications for capital equipment and process changes.
• Design and conduct time studies, method analysis, and other work measurement activities.
• Use computer simulations of processes to provide input and recommendations for production improvements.
• Serve as a technical resource, providing expert assistance and on-the-job training to ensure work is performed per specifications safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
• Meet key performance measures for assigned process families in safety, quality, cost, productivity, and timely completion of customer orders.
• Create, update, and maintain routings, work instructions, and blueprints to meet customer specifications and quality standards cost-efficiently.
• Work across all three plants/shifts to maintain support for projects and production.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering/technology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 5 years of related experience in machining, manufacturing, and/or the metals industry.
• Experience in project management, industrial engineering methods, and technical applications of manufacturing practices.
• Proficient knowledge of SolidWorks or other CAD/CAM software and Geometrical Tolerance specification/application.
• Highly proficient ability to communicate technical issues to internal production and business departments, as well as external vendors and customers.
• Expert mathematical and mechanical skills.
• Extensive experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, and PowerPoint.

Desired Skills

• History of success in improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
• Knowledge and experience in quality tools and relevant safety regulations.
• Experience in Value Stream Mapping, Time Standards, Line Balancing, and Plant Floor Layout.
• Training in Lean Manufacturing, Visual Factory, Kanban, Kaizen, and Six-Sigma methods.
• Materials flow management experience.
• Experience with ERP or MRP software.
• Experience with writing CNC programs and CNC setups.

Schedule

100% onsite, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

This position is primarily located in Spring Grove, IL, with occasional travel to plants in Franklin Park, IL, and Clinton, WI.

Working Conditions

• Mixture of office work and occasional time in production areas where forklifts, overhead cranes, and related equipment are in use.
• Exposure to heat, cold, wet, and/or humid conditions.
• Potential exposure to excessive loud noise in production environments; appropriate PPE is mandatory.

Pay

The estimated pay range for this position reflects the lowest and highest range Scot Forge believes it would pay for this role at the time of posting. The actual base pay offered will depend on factors such as relevant skills, experience, qualifications, education, certifications, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, and business needs. No amount of pay is considered wages or compensation until earned, vested, and determinable.
