About the Role

This position is for an experienced Manual VTL Machinist Technician responsible for machining turbine engine components to achieve specified dimensions, ensuring conformity to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications. The role operates within a large Machining Department that includes CNC VTL, Mill, Grind, Manual Mill and VTL, Tool & Die, R&D, CNC Programming, and dedicated machinist trainers. The successful candidate will work in a climate-controlled, state-of-the-art facility alongside a team of professional machinists, fostering continuous skill development and knowledge sharing in techniques, print reading, and technical drawing interpretation.

Responsibilities

  • Follow established safety protocols and company policies.
  • Adhere to written and verbal work instructions, using approved gauges and tools to inspect parts and determine required material removal, including setting gauges to approved master gauges.
  • Operate machines to remove material to achieve required dimensions before or after coating applications or to establish part features, including loading and unloading parts as part of setup.
  • Ensure dimensional accuracy using inspection gauges, comparators, micrometers, calipers, and miscellaneous hand tools.
  • Identify and correct machining problems related to tools, holders, collets, and chucks.
  • Accurately record findings on work instructions and documentation.
  • Perform finishing operations such as deburring, tapping, honing, and bench work.
  • Participate in training and offer expertise in the OJT program for various levels of machinist technicians.

Requirements

  • Five or more years of experience operating Manual Turret Lathe (VTL) equipment in a job shop environment.
  • First article experience.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and experience with machine setups.
  • Proficiency with VTL and lathe tooling, securing and fixturing workpieces.
  • Firm understanding of GD&T, critical dimensioning, and the relationship between dimensions.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and indicate fixtures and parts to achieve required runouts.
  • Understanding of timing or rotational values and how to establish machining starting points using existing features.
  • Experience creating a flat plane for the start of machining and rework experience.

Qualifications

  • Technical high school diploma, machinist trade school, or equivalent work experience.
  • Set-up experience with tooling and fixtures, with the ability to follow instructions per technical drawings or work instructions.
  • Familiarity with shop math principles and basic trigonometry.
  • General skills in using hand-held power tools, files, assembly, and disassembly.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English, and communicate effectively with other employees.

Work Environment

  • Pre-employment testing may include fitness-for-duty and vision exams.
  • Follow general shop safety procedures, including the use of safety glasses, safety toe shoes, and hearing protection.
  • Stand and/or sit for portions of the shift.
  • Move parts weighing over 50 pounds using hoists, slings, carts, or other handling methods; move lighter parts with or without assistance.
  • Occasional use of powered and hand-held tools.
