About the role
The Manual Grinder operates Chamfer Grinders and other manual machines to produce high-precision cutting tools. You will verify accuracy using engineering prints, component drawings, assembly drawings, and engineering specifications, and assemble the final product to print specifications.
Responsibilities
- Set up and adjust offsets as required.
- Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
- Verify conformance of finished workpieces to specifications.
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, grinders, and shapers.
- Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors: speed, feed, depth, and angle of cut.
- Perform daily machinery checks to ensure functionality.
- Use prints and bill of materials to assemble the final product.
- Perform other assigned duties.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Certification from a qualified training institution in machining preferred but not required.
- Minimum of 1 year of machine shop experience.
- Experience with Surface Grinders preferred.
Skills
- Strong math skills, including the ability to convert metric to inch and decimal to fraction.
- Ability to read blueprints accurately.
- Proficiency in calculating dimensions and tolerances using mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and calipers.
- Experience machining parts to specifications using tools like lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
- Ability to measure, examine, and test completed tools to detect defects and ensure conformance with specifications.
- Ability to set up, adjust, and operate basic machine tools for precision machining operations.
- Ability to monitor feeds and speeds of machines during the machining process.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of standing with some lifting, bending, and twisting.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stoop, bend, or kneel as required.
