About the role
The Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) seeks a Managing Director of Teaching and Learning to serve as the network’s instructional leader. The Managing Director will ensure high-quality instruction and a productive learning environment aligned with HCZ Promise Academy’s pillars and the NY Learning Standards. The ideal candidate will have a passion for HCZ’s mission, a track record of improving student outcomes through data-informed decision-making, and deep respect for the Central Harlem community.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate a well-articulated, current, and comprehensive educational program consistent with Promise Academy Charter School pillars and NY Learning Standards.
- Design and implement a curriculum review process using multiple measures of data to evaluate and recommend modifications or new programs.
- Ensure integration of instructional programs with emphasis on K–12 articulation and consistency.
- Organize regular network curriculum meetings with professional staff and related groups to foster collaboration in curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
- Coordinate network Extended Learning Programs.
- With the Director of Information Systems, oversee all curriculum-related technology systems and plan for effective integration of educational technology.
- Supervise and coordinate curriculum, textbook, and instructional media selection and adoption processes, including submission to the Deputy Superintendent and Superintendent for Board approval.
- Assist in developing and coordinating budget sections related to curriculum and instruction.
- Provide supplemental instruction to scholars during extended learning opportunities.
- Support Principals and Education Directors in reviewing, observing, and evaluating professional staff performance.
- With the Deputy Superintendent and Superintendent, oversee the Network’s instructional improvement plans.
- Coordinate all aspects of the Robertson Foundation Grant with the Director of Literacy.
- Collaborate with the Director of Special Services, English as a New Language, Counseling, and Principals on a comprehensive K–12 assessment program, including instrument selection, alternative assessment design, and use of testing data to drive instruction.
- Interpret assessment results to key stakeholders with the Deputy Superintendent.
- With the Director of Training and Development, design and implement in-service and professional development experiences for staff and teacher fellows based on network priorities.
- Facilitate administrators’ and staff’s participation in professional development to enhance job-related knowledge and skills.
- Stay current with research in curriculum development, teaching, and learning and interpret findings for staff.
- Promote ongoing two-way communication with students, school personnel, parents, and community members to enhance the educational program.
- Coordinate preparation and dissemination of program-related literature and publications.
- Participate in administrative and curriculum meetings and facilitate articulation experiences for instructional and other staff.
- Continue own professional growth through memberships, workshops, conferences, advanced courses, and related activities.
- Stay current with developments in the profession by attending workshops, reading journals, and participating in relevant experiences.
- Represent the network at local and NY State meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Deputy Superintendent.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Administration and Supervision, or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Valid New York State School Building Leader (SBL) or School District Leader (SDL) certification preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of administrative or leadership experience.
- Deep understanding of NY Learning Standards.
- Extensive experience in curriculum development and MTSS/RTI.
- Demonstrated success in administrative leadership and data-driven decision-making.
- Strong human relations, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Special Considerations
- Serves as HCZ Promise Academy’s point of contact in the organization when the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent are unavailable.
- Supports preparation and facilitation of organization site visits and special engagements.
- Acts as an instructional resource for programming decisions across the organization.
- May be required to participate in zone activities after school and on weekends.
- Must be accessible for emergencies requiring support outside of regular work hours and on weekends.

Pay
The salary range for this position is $175,000–$185,000 per year.
