About the role

The Managing Director of Development (MDD) position at City Year Detroit is seeking an experienced fundraising professional with an entrepreneurial mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the organization's comprehensive fundraising, marketing, and communications strategy to ensure long-term financial sustainability and visibility.
  • Oversight of a high-performing development team responsible for achieving annual fundraising goals through major gifts, institutional giving, corporate partnerships, grant writing, special events, and donor stewardship.
  • Develop and execute strategies to secure multi-year investments, identify and cultivate new funding opportunities, strengthen relationships with existing supporters, and actively engage the Board of Directors in fundraising, stewardship, and ambassadorial efforts.
  • Contribute to organizational strategy and collaborate across departments to advance City Year's mission and strategic priorities.

Requirements

  • Strategic and ambitious leader with a compelling communicator and equity-driven fundraising background.
  • Experience leading fundraising teams and developing comprehensive fundraising strategies.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with donors, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience with donor stewardship and engagement.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit fundraising principles and practices.
  • Experience working with corporate, foundation, individual donor, and public funder partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., nonprofit management, business, public administration).
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in fundraising, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising campaigns and major gift acquisition.
  • Experience managing a development team and overseeing fundraising operations.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit governance and board dynamics.
