About the Role

We're seeking a Managing Director to own and lead AIOA's Nonprofit Practice, a business unit serving social service agencies, foundations, advocacy groups, community organizations, and membership associations. You'll set the direction, lead the people, own the practice-level client outcomes, and be accountable for the full P&L of your business unit.

Responsibilities

  • Own the full client portfolio of the Nonprofit Practice at the practice level, including retention, satisfaction, NPS, and expansion opportunities.
  • Serve as the escalation management point for complex or at-risk client situations that exceed the CFO level.
  • Set and maintain quality standards for nonprofit financial advisory work, including audit readiness, grant compliance, fund accounting accuracy, and board-level reporting.
  • Drive expansion of services within the existing book through your CFOs, identifying opportunities to deepen AIOA's value to each nonprofit.
  • Define the ideal client profile for the Nonprofit Practice and partner with the Business Development team to ensure that profile guides prospecting.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert closer for qualified nonprofit prospects surfaced by the Business Development team.
  • Deliver workbook analysis and Value Workshops to clients, providing strategic financial perspective at the practice level.
  • Develop and grow strategic partnerships in the nonprofit sector, including auditors, attorneys, funders, and nonprofit leadership networks.
  • Hire, develop, and retain talent across your practice, ensuring a high-performing team of CFOs.
  • Manage capacity proactively, ensuring your practice is neither overwhelmed nor underutilized.
  • Hold your CFOs accountable to their client outcomes, team health metrics, and EOS commitments.
  • Create career pathways and development plans for team members within the practice.
  • Foster a culture of Commitment, Foresight, Relationships, Tenacity, and Teamwork within the Nonprofit Practice.
  • Own the full P&L of the Nonprofit Practice, including revenue, cost management, profitability, and budget accountability.
  • Develop and execute the annual practice plan, including growth targets, hiring plans, and service delivery goals.
  • Report on practice performance to the EVP, Operations through EOS tools like Scorecard, Rocks, and L10 meetings.
  • Drive process improvements and best practices that elevate nonprofit service delivery across the firm.
  • Build and maintain AIOA's external reputation in the nonprofit sector through thought leadership and strategic partnerships.
  • Stay current on nonprofit accounting standards, regulatory changes, funder requirements, and sector trends.
  • Champion technology standards within the Nonprofit Practice, ensuring efficient and scalable service delivery.
  • Identify and advocate for new service lines or delivery approaches to strengthen the practice's competitive position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred)
  • Experience in a multi-client or Client Accounting Services (CAS) environment strongly preferred
  • 12–15+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit accounting and financial leadership
  • Proven track record of leading, managing, and holding teams accountable (LMA)
  • Deep expertise in nonprofit GAAP, fund accounting, audit management, and grant compliance
  • Demonstrated experience owning client portfolios and practice-level business outcomes
  • P&L ownership or business unit management experience strongly preferred
  • Established presence or network in the nonprofit sector with external thought leadership credibility
  • Excellence in executive-level communication with nonprofit leaders, boards, and external advisors
  • Experience with or familiarity with EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) preferred
  • Open to internal candidates with CFO experience at AIOA ready for practice leadership

Base Salary: $175,000 – $200,000
