About the role

Vallen's Warehouse/Distribution Center Manager is a staff management position responsible for managing warehouse staff responsible for receiving, unloading, inspecting, picking, packing, and/or shipping goods. This role monitors associate productivity, inventory management, and packing and shipping accuracy to ensure quality customer service to all Vallen customers. The manager ensures all areas of assigned warehouse operations comply with internal and external safety standards or regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Staff management duties including interviewing, selecting, hiring, coaching, counseling, training, delegating work assignments, and disciplining associates while enforcing company policies, procedures, and productivity standards.
  • Sets goals and daily productivity expectations while maintaining a positive and collaborative culture built on employee respect; ensures team resources are used effectively and both productivity and profitability targets are achieved.
  • Supports sales growth through excellent customer service and providing supply chain solutions; promotes a high level of customer service with accurate and on-time deliveries.
  • Collaborates and coordinates activities with purchasing to ensure availability of merchandise.
  • Directs reclamation of damaged merchandise; may coordinate transportation schedules.
  • Oversees associate cross-training initiatives; collaborates with the training department for new training initiatives.
  • Participates in on-going process improvement initiatives; monitors the effectiveness of handling procedures and space utilization and makes recommendations for improvements; may lead automation and new technology projects.
  • Tracks and performs to Vallen's standardized operating metrics (KOLPI's -- Key Operating Logistics Performance Indicators):
    • Warehouse Response Rate
    • Same Day Shipping
    • External Accuracy
    • Lines Shipped Per Man Hour
    • Cost Per Line
    • Cycle Count Accuracy
  • Promotes and provides mentorship regarding the use of lean tools and concepts.
  • Maintains a safe and secure work environment.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of related business experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.
  • Strong computer knowledge and aptitude to learn various applications; experience with a Warehouse Management System preferred; knowledge of SX.e a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of warehousing functions, such as loading, unloading, picking, packing, shipping, and moving goods throughout a distribution center/warehouse environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, work orders, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Strong communication skills, effective problem-solving skills, sound judgment, good organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to maintain composure, effectiveness, and flexibility under pressure.
  • Basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals); ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent preferred.
  • Ability to compile routine reports and write correspondence.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and be self-motivated to accomplish assigned tasks and goals.

Staff Management Responsibilities

  • Immediate supervision over a unit, section, or department where the majority of time is spent assigning, reviewing, and checking work, and eliminating ordinary difficulties.
  • Recommends candidates for hiring and termination; prepares and conducts performance appraisals and salary reviews; applies company policies.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Work environment may not be temperature controlled; ability to work in extreme hot or cold environments and dusty conditions.
  • Long periods working on a computer and performing repetitive keyboarding activities.
  • Extended day, evening, and weekend work may be required as job duties demand, with little to no advanced notice.
  • May be required to handle hazardous materials and wear various forms of protective equipment (shoes, gloves, protective eyewear, etc.).
  • May be required to drive a forklift and/or operate other standard warehouse equipment; may need to pass forklift and/or other warehouse equipment certifications (written and/or driving).
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to handle and work physical inventory; required to lift up to 25 lbs or greater with assistance following standard operating and safety procedures.
  • Other physical requirements include regularly standing, walking, kneeling, bending, crouching, crawling, climbing, and balancing.

Qualifications

Experience should include:

  • 5+ years of related business experience in a warehouse/distribution center environment.
