About the Opportunity
The Manager, Software Engineering - Storage Platform leads the team responsible for the core database infrastructure supporting the organization''s platform. This role is critical for maintaining the reliability and performance of foundational data systems, shaping infrastructure strategy, and integrating AI to enhance database operations. The position ensures the platform''s data tier supports the rapid scaling and diverse needs of product engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop engineers managing core database systems including sharded Postgres clusters, schema management, and provisioning tools
- Ensure reliability and operational excellence of the data tier through incident management and resilience investments
- Define technical direction and roadmap balancing reliability with platform capabilities
- Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to prioritize work across competing demands
- Recruit, retain, and grow infrastructure engineering talent and foster a strong team culture
- Drive execution through planning, progress reviews, and transparent communication
- Coordinate with other engineering managers on shared standards and cross-team initiatives
- Promote AI-assisted tooling to improve developer experience in database operations
Requirements
- Minimum 4 years managing infrastructure, platform, or backend engineering teams
- Strong technical background in distributed systems, stateful infrastructure, or data-intensive backend systems
- Ability to quickly learn new technical domains and apply engineering fundamentals
- Experience improving on-call culture, incident response, and reliability for production systems
- Proven track record of coaching and developing engineers and managing team dynamics
- Experience leading distributed teams across multiple time zones
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience managing multiple teams or managers
- Experience defining technical vision across multiple streams
- Hands-on operation of relational databases at scale, including sharding and migration
- Familiarity with AI/LLM-assisted developer tooling
- Background in related infrastructure areas like caching, streaming, or observability
- Experience in a high-growth product environment requiring rapid infrastructure evolution
Pay and Compensation
Annual base salary range: 258,000—376,000 USD, adjusted for work location
