At Houston Methodist West Hospital, the Manager Respiratory Care Svcs position assists the Director in all aspects of operations and supervision of Respiratory Care, Pulmonary Laboratory, and other assigned departments. In the absence of the Director, this role assumes those duties and may be directly assigned to various departmental responsibilities, including financial, clinical, and support operations.

Responsibilities

  • Manages daily work activities of the department staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency while assisting in achieving strategic and operational objectives.
  • Provides guidance to staff, including staffing decisions such as hiring, terminating employment, coaching, and counseling on work-related performance.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment.
  • Implements training, monitoring, and operational initiatives to secure compliance with ethical, legal, and accreditation/regulatory/government regulations.
  • Performs management responsibilities, including selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees in the department.
  • Develops and mentors staff, ensuring department turnover goals are met or exceeded.
  • Conducts regular department meetings, rounds on employees, completes performance appraisals, and provides feedback and recognition.
  • Plans and organizes day-to-day department operations, schedules, and activities to ensure high customer/patient satisfaction.
  • Drives department service standards to impact patient/customer-based satisfaction scores.
  • Ensures a safe and effective working environment by monitoring and revising the department safety plan and regulatory required safety guidelines.
  • Uses and optimizes information systems to enhance operations and supports performance improvement and data management/analysis functions.
  • Assists in the development of the department budget and ensures cost-effective operations within approved budget parameters.
  • Develops staffing plans and schedules to meet department needs while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
  • Identifies and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes to improve department operations.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of new procedures and the review and revision of existing procedures.
  • Builds strategic relationships to achieve business goals and identifies developmental needs for self and staff.

Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree

Experience: Five years of experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) with three years of supervisory experience. May consider Houston Methodist employees with five years of experience demonstrating progressive leadership responsibility.

Qualifications

  • Required Licenses and Certifications:
    • RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist (NBRC)
    • RCP - Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner - Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
    • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
    • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
  • Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
    • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
    • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation or Instructor (AHA, AAP)

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job through ongoing assessments and evaluations.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, particularly activities impacting patient or employee safety.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers in a customer service-focused manner.
  • Interacts with others to instill confidence in organizational intentions.
  • Uses appropriate interpersonal styles and techniques to gain acceptance of ideas or plans.
  • Demonstrates leadership, critical thinking, self-direction, initiative, and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Identifies and understands issues, problems, and opportunities, using data to draw conclusions and take consistent action.
  • Works effectively in a fast-paced environment and demonstrates flexibility and adaptability.

Supplemental Requirements

  • Work Attire: Scrubs or business professional (department approved).
  • On-Call: May be required during emergencies (e.g., disaster, severe weather events).
  • Travel: May require travel within and outside the Houston Metropolitan area.
