Manager, Platform Engineering - Kubernetes
About the role
The GDS Application Environments team is seeking a Manager, Platform Engineering - Kubernetes to join their team. This role is hybrid, with 2 days on-site per week, and is open to candidates based in Portsmouth, NH, Boston, MA, Plano, TX, and Indianapolis, IN.
Responsibilities
- Hire, manage, and deploy resources across the team to align with business priorities.
- Coach and evaluate the performance and quality of work delivered by team members.
- Create a motivating work environment and ensure continuous learning and quality code delivery.
- Understand tools, architecture, security, and scalability needs for the assigned team and provide technical guidance.
- Manage total cost of ownership, advocate for removing technical debt, and support team effectiveness.
- Champion and utilize agile methodology and practices.
- Lead the engineering team in evolving an enterprise-scale Kubernetes platform that supports the company's strategic technological direction.
- Ensure services and platforms are enhanced and maintained to meet business needs.
- Identify key performance indicators to maintain work product, operational stability, and security excellence.
- Utilize AI and automated reporting to set and coach toward clear engineering goals and improve planning, workflows, and platform outcomes.
- Manage incident response and foster collaborative partnerships with aligned vendors.
- Evaluate, select, and implement new technologies to enhance applications or platforms.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in technical or business discipline.
- Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in a relevant domain, including delivering software solutions in an agile environment.
- Minimum 3 years in a leadership role preferred.
- Proven ability to create a healthy team culture, build fully engaged staff, and gain technical staff’s buy-in on the impact of their work.
- Hands-on experience managing cloud-native infrastructure-based operations and infrastructure as code, DevOps, CI/CD solutions.
- In-depth knowledge of technology standards and guidelines; thorough knowledge of business functions and operations, objectives, and strategies.
Qualifications
- Technical background managing a large-scale platform that is consumed by multiple business units across a highly regulated enterprise.
- Excellent analytical ability, consultative communication, presentation, and management skills.
- Strong judgment and ability to effectively liaise with cross-functional stakeholders and optimize teams.
- In-depth knowledge of technology standards and guidelines; thorough knowledge of business functions and operations, objectives, and strategies.
Skills
- Experience with managed Kubernetes services such as Amazon EKS and/or on-premises distributions.
- Practical familiarity with AI-assisted engineering and understanding of where AI adds value and where human accountability remains.
- Expertise with a specific AI product is not required.

The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role.

This role is hybrid, with 2 days on-site per week.
