About the Role
This registered nurse position is responsible for 24-hour comprehensive operational oversight of patient care delivery and quality in designated areas. The Manager, Nursing fosters interdepartmental and interprofessional collaboration, participates in committees, and assists with developing and implementing performance initiatives to ensure optimal patient safety, outcomes, and customer satisfaction. The role demonstrates leadership through self-direction, initiative, and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
The manager oversees daily work activities of staff, ensures quality and productivity, and assists in achieving strategic and operational objectives. Responsibilities include staffing, budget compliance, hiring, termination, coaching, counseling, and developing policies and procedures for a safe and effective work environment. The position also implements training and operations initiatives to ensure compliance with ethical, legal, and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
People
- Performs management responsibilities including selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of department staff.
- Provides development and mentoring to staff, aiming to meet or exceed department turnover goals.
- Develops direct reports to perform management functions, conducts regular department meetings, and completes performance appraisals.
- Provides timely guidance and feedback to strengthen staff knowledge and skills.
- Facilitates effective team dynamics and teambuilding strategies within and between departments.
- Meets or exceeds threshold goals for department and system metrics on employee engagement.
- Establishes two-way communication with staff, demonstrating active listening and supporting organizational goals.
- Coaches staff on effective communication and stress management practices.
Service
- Plans and organizes day-to-day department operations, schedules, and activities to ensure high customer/patient satisfaction.
- Drives department service standards to impact patient/customer-based satisfaction through role modeling and accountability.
- Actively participates on entity committees as a department representative.
- Serves as a role model, reinforcing service orientation and resolving concerns or conflicts effectively.
- Maintains ongoing interactions with patients, families, physicians, and staff to improve patient care and service.
Quality/Safety
- Ensures a safe and effective working environment by monitoring and revising the department safety plan and infection control guidelines.
- Confirms staff maintain required credentials and competencies per accrediting agency or department guidelines.
- Uses and optimizes information systems to enhance operations and support performance improvement.
- Employs a proactive approach to safe outcomes by monitoring workflow, reporting near misses/adverse events, and identifying solutions.
- Adopts lean principles for process improvements and role models situational awareness.
- Monitors compliance with policies, procedures, and HR standards, taking action on non-compliance.
- Prepares measurable goals and objectives aligned with Houston Methodist priorities.
Finance
- Assists in developing and managing the department budget to ensure cost-effective operations.
- Manages and audits department expenses to meet budgeted revenue and expense targets.
- Develops staffing plans and schedules to meet patient care needs while optimizing productivity and minimizing overtime.
- Plans unit coverage to maximize management and staff presence.
Growth/Innovation
- Identifies and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes to improve department operations.
- Supports change initiatives and maintains effectiveness during major changes in work responsibilities or environment.
- Proactively evaluates processes, recommends action plans for change, and ensures sustainable improvements.
- Participates in developing and implementing new procedures and reviewing existing ones.
- Builds strategic relationships between departments to achieve business goals.
- Identifies developmental needs for self and staff, completing and updating individual development plans (IDPs).
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing.
- Three years’ experience in nursing, with one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare. For internal candidates, two years’ nursing experience with demonstrated leadership abilities (e.g., charge nurse responsibilities).
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure from the Texas Board of Nursing. Compact licensure accepted with a requirement to obtain a permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Instructor certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
- ANCC Recognized Leadership Certification (Magnet) within one year of employment.

Supplemental Requirements
- Scrubs or business professional attire as approved by the department.
- On-call requirements during emergencies (e.g., disasters, severe weather events).
- May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area.
