Manager of Logistics
About the role
The Manager of Logistics leads the daily transportation, dispatch, and rail logistics operations for Sunrock, overseeing planning, coordination, and execution of aggregate product deliveries while ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation. This role also provides logistics support for Sunrock’s Contracting division, including asphalt hauling, coordination of internal and third-party trucking resources, and efficient execution of paving and contracting projects. The position partners closely with Operations, Sales, Maintenance, Customer Service, Finance, Contracting, and executive leadership to optimize fleet utilization, improve customer service, and support strategic initiatives. The incumbent reports directly to the Vice President of Ready Mix and Logistics and collaborates regularly with the Chief Operating Officer on transportation performance, continuous improvement initiatives, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Safety: Champion Sunrock’s safety commitment by ensuring compliance with company safety policies, OSHA, NCDOT, and applicable regulatory requirements; promote a culture of safety through coaching, communication, and accountability; conduct safety meetings and training; investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses; monitor PPE compliance and safe work practices; ensure transportation personnel receive required safety training.
- Dispatch & Scalehouse Operations: Lead daily transportation and dispatch operations to ensure timely delivery and maximize fleet utilization; oversee dispatch scheduling based on production capacity, customer demand, equipment availability, and delivery priorities; manage company fleet and coordinate third-party hauling resources; develop transportation plans to maximize efficiency and minimize costs; monitor driver productivity and dispatch performance via KPIs; troubleshoot transportation issues and resolve service interruptions; coordinate with Operations and Sales to meet customer delivery expectations; ensure compliance with NCDOT regulations and company policies; participate in dispatch operations during peak workloads.
- Rail Logistics: Oversee rail transportation planning and execution; coordinate rail shipments and maximize railcar utilization; serve as primary point of contact with railroad partners; monitor customer inventory levels and coordinate replenishment schedules; coordinate emergency transportation solutions during rail delays; ensure accurate Bills of Lading and shipping documentation; track rail logistics performance and identify process improvements.
- Contracting & Asphalt Operations: Oversee logistics activities supporting Sunrock’s Contracting division, including asphalt hauling operations; coordinate company and third-party trucking resources for paving and construction projects; partner with Contracting Operations to ensure timely delivery of asphalt and materials to job sites; develop transportation plans to optimize truck utilization and minimize downtime; monitor hauling performance, production schedules, and project demands; collaborate with plant operations and field leadership to address transportation constraints and changing project needs; support strategic growth initiatives related to Contracting transportation capabilities and fleet expansion.
- Leadership: Lead, coach, mentor, and develop the logistics and dispatch team; recruit, hire, onboard, and retain high-performing employees; conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching; foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement; develop staffing plans; establish departmental goals aligned with company objectives; promote employee engagement and professional development; maintain P&L responsibility.
- Operational Excellence: Develop and monitor KPIs including fleet utilization, on-time delivery, driver productivity, transportation costs, customer service metrics, and rail performance; analyze operational data and recommend process improvements; identify cost-reduction opportunities while improving service levels; lead continuous improvement initiatives; support technology improvements and logistics system enhancements.
- Customer Service: Partner with Sales and Customer Service to deliver exceptional customer experiences; resolve transportation issues promptly and professionally; communicate delivery schedules and updates; build strong relationships with internal and external customers.
- Financial Responsibilities: Assist in developing and managing the annual transportation budget; monitor transportation expenses and identify cost-saving opportunities; review transportation reports and operational metrics; ensure accurate reporting of transportation-related data; support financial planning through operational forecasting.
- Fleet & Equipment: Partner with maintenance to maximize fleet availability; coordinate preventative maintenance schedules; monitor fleet performance and equipment utilization; minimize downtime through proactive planning; support replacement planning and capital equipment initiatives.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with NCDOT regulations, FMCSA requirements, OSHA regulations, company policies, and environmental requirements; maintain accurate transportation records; support audits and regulatory inspections.
Requirements
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain, Business, Construction Management, or related field.
- Minimum five to eight years of progressive transportation, logistics, dispatch, fleet management, or supply chain experience.
- Minimum three years of leadership or supervisory experience.
- Experience leading dispatch operations.
- Knowledge of NCDOT and FMCSA regulations.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills.
- Rail logistics experience preferred.
- Experience in construction materials, aggregates, mining, asphalt, ready-mix, transportation, or heavy industrial operations preferred.
- Experience with transportation management systems (TMS), ERP systems, or logistics software preferred.
- Lean or Continuous Improvement experience preferred.

Typical work schedule is Monday–Friday, 10–12 hour days, and Saturdays as required. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) may be required. The incumbent must practice absolute confidentiality.
