Manager of Field Operations
About the role
Research, field measure, estimate, scheme, design, plan, organize, and direct the operations and personnel in the Field Operations Department to ensure an efficient, safe, quality-driven, and productive operation consistent with Company goals. Develop plans in conjunction with marketing to highlight High Structural Erectors’ capabilities in bridge and concrete structure erection. Build rapport with contractors, state material and bridge engineers, and outside vendors and subcontractors to grow the company’s bridge erection business.
Responsibilities
- Develop and direct implementation of approved short-term and long-range strategies for Field Operations.
- Conduct sales research to determine current market conditions, including project types, numbers, and locations.
- Develop and implement programs to increase market share and profitability based on market research.
- Provide input to Planning, Engineering, and Scheduling to coordinate information for efficient, safe, and economical project erection.
- Direct the development and review of engineering drawings related to bridge and concrete structure erection or rehabilitation.
- Estimate and bid rehabilitation and new steel projects, ensuring final pricing and scope approval by the VP Managing Director.
- Establish payroll, security, salary, and insurance requirements for awarded projects in compliance with contract terms.
- Formulate weekly manpower requirements with Field Operation personnel and Foremen.
- Manage communications with contractors regarding preliminary requirements, procedures, and schedules to ensure project progress and profitability.
- Direct Foremen in individual project goals and review job outcomes upon completion; develop procedures to improve efficiency.
- Ensure estimate data is broken down, understood, and utilized by Foremen as a planning and monitoring tool.
- Analyze job costs and performance weekly to redirect Field Operations and administrative activities for improved performance.
- Assist Engineering and Estimating Departments in bidding projects involving new bridge steel, rehabilitation, and concrete structures.
- Provide leadership to improve bidding procedures for accuracy.
- Direct bridge erection, rehabilitation, and concrete structure projects to comply with safety and regulatory standards (OSHA, PCI, EPA, NRC, AISC, and other agencies).
- Ensure Foremen conduct daily planning and safety huddles; attend safety meetings and communicate safety information to Field Operations.
- Promote a safe working environment for Foremen and crew members.
- Provide accurate monthly forecasts using the SAP system for HSE third-party work and sister companies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Marginal Job Functions
- Participate in the evaluation of Field Operations personnel and grant wage increases.
- Keep the VP Managing Director informed of problems, progress, and major changes in procedures and personnel.
- Visit vendor/customer offices to ensure communications and plans align with company objectives and profitability.
- Visit job sites to monitor progress and resolve issues advantageously for High Structural Erectors.
- Promote a favorable company image with contractors and government officials to enhance goodwill.
Requirements
- 10 years of experience in bridge and concrete structure erection, including hands-on field site experience and engineering responsibility.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; additional study in Management preferred.
- Professional Engineer’s license preferred.
Dimensions
- Responsible for bridge and concrete structure erection volume, including new steel, rehabilitation projects, and concrete parking garages/buildings, with an annual sales volume of $5–$10 million.
- Marketing of High Structural Erectors’ capabilities to expand bridge erection business.
Reporting Relationships
Accountable to the Vice President Managing Director. Direct reports include the Superintendent. Indirect reports include Foremen – Field Operations, Erection Equipment Coordinator, and Ironworkers I, II, and III.
