The Manager, Nuclear Design role is a remote leadership position based in the United States. It is managed by a partner company on behalf of a nuclear engineering firm.
About the role
This role involves leading nuclear design activities, managing technical teams, and ensuring successful delivery of fuel design programs. Key responsibilities include providing technical direction, maintaining design integrity, coordinating technical interfaces, and supporting customer and regulatory interactions.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical direction and daily management for engineering teams responsible for core design, neutronics analysis, fuel design, thermal-mechanical analysis, and related engineering activities.
- Maintain design basis discipline by ensuring engineering outputs align with licensed design requirements, approved methodologies, and applicable nuclear standards.
- Manage configuration control of core design documentation, fuel specifications, and licensing commitments.
- Identify potential licensing impacts and collaborate with regulatory teams to define appropriate strategies.
- Oversee technical relationships with suppliers, including fuel manufacturers and software vendors.
- Develop technical requirements, statements of work, schedules, resource plans, and project execution strategies.
- Cook up technical reviews, audits, and quality assurance activities to ensure compliance with requirements.
- Support customer, regulator, and external stakeholder interactions.
- Provide coaching, performance feedback, and career development support to engineering team members.
- Promote strong safety culture, quality standards, and continuous improvement across all activities.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related technical discipline; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering experience in a relevant technical area.
- At least 5 years of leadership, supervisory, or team management experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of nuclear fuel design, core design, neutronics analysis, reload design, and related engineering methods.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and complex technical programs.
- Familiarity with nuclear regulatory requirements, including NRC-approved methods, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, 10 CFR 21, and NQA-1 standards.
- Eligibility to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810 requirements.
- Proven ability to coordinate technical interfaces and deliver engineering solutions within project timelines.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to build collaborative teams, mentor engineers, and manage competing priorities.
- Ability to adapt to evolving project requirements and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to travel as required for business needs.
