Responsibilities
- Establishes priorities of patient care based on essential needs and available resources of time, equipment, personnel and supplies.
- Confers with other departments or outside resources regarding unit / patient needs.
- Plans and directs orientation of new hires:
- Provides orientation checklist and ensures completing in a timely manner.
- Oversees preceptors.
- Oversees placement of nursing students on the unit.
- Supports staff in recognizing signs of abuse and how to report appropriately to Child / Adult Protective Services.
- Evaluates staff ability to administer and control narcotics including parenterals and blood components. Assists staff in detecting and reporting medication errors and ADRs according to hospital policy.
- Directs, supervises, and evaluates nursing care provided to patients.
- Responsible for coordination of unit specific Performance Improvement activities and utilizes the information to improve the quality of patient care.
- Observes the performance of nursing personnel and completes performance evaluations. Handles appropriate problems with performance of unit personnel and follows up appropriately.
- Ensures staff consistently complete an accurate pertinent initial assessment on new patients including psychosocial and emotional needs within the established time frame (30 minutes for unstable / critical patients).
- Consistently uses two patient identifiers when drawing lab, administering medications and performing procedures.

Required Qualification
- Current and valid CA Registered Nurse license required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- Sexual Harassment/ Bullying Prevention Certification required. (1 month from hire)
- CURRENT Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
- BSN preferred.
- Masters Degree in Nursing, Hospital Administration, Business Administration or related field preferred.
- Minimum two years supervisory/management experience preferred.
