Amazon Robotics is seeking a talented and motivated Mechatronics Engineering Manager to lead a multidisciplinary team of Mechatronics Engineers and Mechanical Engineers. This role focuses on designing, developing, and testing actuation solutions and next-generation robotic systems, guiding the full lifecycle of hardware development from concept through production readiness and scaled deployment.

About the role

You will serve as a technical people leader, setting the standard for engineering excellence while fostering collaboration across mechanical and mechatronics disciplines. A critical part of your responsibility will be partnering with controls, electrical, and software engineering teams to deliver fully integrated actuation and robotic solutions for Amazon's robotics platforms operating at scale across hundreds of fulfillment sites worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, develop, and retain top talent across mechanical and mechatronics engineering disciplines; continually raise the bar for engineering rigor and performance.
  • Manage and mentor a team of Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineers, fostering cradle-to-grave ownership of hardware development.
  • Develop and report performance metrics for the engineering team to peers and executives.
  • Own the delivery of mechanical and mechatronic products to market on time, within budget, and at targeted performance levels.
  • Scope, manage, and deliver multiple technical projects in parallel from concept to production.
  • Guide interdisciplinary teams through product design phases: specification, design, prototyping, validation, and testing.
  • Interface with engineering managers, product management, and program management to drive new product development programs.
  • Oversee the design and integration of holistic electromechanical hardware solutions for complex, ambiguous problems with evolving requirements.
  • Direct the creation of detailed design specifications, 3D models, and schematics for mechatronic and robotic systems.
  • Ensure development and debugging of embedded systems, sensors, and automation controllers for reliable system performance.
  • Oversee simulation, evaluation, testing, and validation of robotic and electromechanical systems against performance and safety standards.
  • Drive root cause analysis on system failures and implement corrective actions to improve reliability and uptime.
  • Ensure functional specifications, design verification plans, and test procedures are written to maintain engineering rigor.
  • Maintain high-level communication with cross-functional teams and partners.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Quality organizations to ensure smooth product launch and sustaining.
  • Manage vendor relationships, component procurement, and supply chain integration to support production timelines.
  • Evaluate and identify improvements to overall design processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement and design for manufacturability across high-volume production environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in robotics, mechanical/mechatronics engineering, systems engineering, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical design, with at least 3+ years of management experience.
  • Experience in the design of rotary actuation and related components (BLDC motors, bearings, grease, gears, etc.).
  • Familiarity with industry-standard CAD & FEA design tools and trends.
  • Experience managing process-driven development while balancing time-to-market demands.
  • Commitment to rigorous testing and validation practices.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills; ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written (white papers) and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in engineering team management across mechanical and/or mechatronics disciplines.
  • Extensive system design experience interfacing with electromechanical subsystems and debugging.
  • SolidWorks or similar CAD experience, including best practices for part design, advanced assemblies, and complex configuration management.
  • Experience developing functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures.
  • Hands-on experience crafting proof-of-concept models and prototypes.
  • Thorough understanding of technical principles, theories, and concepts in hardware development.
  • Experience with full product lifecycle and proficiency at completing tasks to meet milestones.
  • Experience evaluating design, performance, and logistical tradeoffs for hardware systems.
  • Experience in DFx (cost, test, manufacturing).
  • Experience with the project management of technical projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing products for large-volume production.
  • Experience managing teams of 8+ engineers.
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in robotic development and electromechanical system integration.
  • Experience in actuation, motor development, and fundamentals of actuator design (gear train, linkage, transmission systems).
  • Experience with sensor selection, integration, and calibration in robotic systems.
  • Familiarity with machine vision hardware (camera modules, compute platforms, optical system integration).
  • Experience designing, developing, and certifying safety-rated systems.
  • Experience with Design for Reliability (DFMEA, PFMEA, reliability testing methodologies).
  • Experience designing and debugging tooled components (cast, injection mold, forge, stamp).
  • Experience with thermal management and heat dissipation design for electromechanical systems.
  • Experience in electronics packaging (PCBA mechanical design, sensor incorporation, IP-compliant enclosures).
  • Understanding of control systems fundamentals (servo tuning, PID control, motion profiling).
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks Simulation or ANSYS Finite Element Analysis tools.
  • Proficiency documenting designs in accordance with ANSI Y-14.5.
  • Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for data analysis, simulation, and rapid prototyping.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, CNC machining).
  • Proficiency with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software and ECOs.
  • Experience leading product enhancements to improve performance of existing products.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to lead and collaborate across cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to support domestic and international travel as required by the program.

Pay

USA, MA, North Reading - $151,000.00 - $204,300.00 USD annually.
