Manager Landscaping

About the role

The Landscaping Manager provides day-to-day direction to landscaping staff and operations at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro, TN. This role coordinates resources—labor, equipment, and materials—to ensure work is completed within budget, safety guidelines, and quality standards. The position supervises 10–25 employees, with potential for additional seasonal staff, and may support landscaping activities company-wide.

Responsibilities

Administrative & Training

• Manages and schedules labor, equipment, and materials to meet production schedules within established budgets.
• Ensures adherence to the Medxcel Facilities Management Landscaping Handbook and Scope of Work (SOW) to maintain customer satisfaction.
• Ensures all work complies with safety policies and guidelines.
• Investigates accidents or safety violations, prepares reports, and implements corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Orders materials, equipment, and supplies within purchasing limits.
• Oversees human resource management, including hiring, firing, training, coaching, and mentoring staff to meet individual and division goals.
• Identifies and develops leaders within the team.
• Maintains sufficient staffing to meet production schedules and forecasts future needs.
• Conducts timely performance reviews and takes corrective actions as needed.
• Coordinates labor, equipment, and materials with other facilities in the division when appropriate.
• Responds to customer complaints to ensure excellent satisfaction.
• Maintains day-to-day knowledge of all contracts, including field completion status.
• Keeps costs within assigned budgets.
• Plans and organizes snow removal during winter months.
• Participates in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars to gather or convey job-related information.
• Provides additional support and training to Landscaping Technicians as needed.

General Landscaping

• Visits job sites regularly to observe work organization, address training issues, and ensure quality.
• Operates mechanical equipment, including mowers, backhoes, bobcats, dingos, tillers, sod cutters, weed eaters, plant augers, chain saws, and drills.
• Operates non-CDL automatic and manual vehicles, such as dump trucks and truck-and-trailer combinations.
• Maintains high standards of housekeeping and care for company assets, including vehicles, shops, field offices, and customer work sites.
• Stays aware of best practices and recommends improved work methods and standards.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Chemical Treatments

• Diagnoses pest issues and takes remedial action as directed by company policy or management.
• Diagnoses other site problems and recommends improvements.

Special Projects

• Assists and participates in special projects as assigned.
• Supports Facilities Maintenance staff on projects as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or a related field, or at least eight (8) years of landscaping experience in lieu of a degree.
• Valid state driver’s license (required).
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (preferred).
• Pesticide certification (preferred).

Qualifications

• Five years of experience in the landscaping field (required).
• Three years of supervisory experience (required).
• Three years of experience in business management, including basic accounting skills (required).
• Ten years of experience in the landscaping field (preferred).
