Manager Infection Prevention

About the role

At Parkland Medical Center, you’ll coordinate and implement the Infection Prevention Plan, using effective guidelines and methods to identify, control, and prevent nosocomial infections. This role drives continuous quality improvements for patients, visitors, and associates by minimizing the spread of communicable and transmittable infections. You’ll provide systemic education for all employees in infection control theory and practice, ensuring compliance and engagement across the organization.

Responsibilities

• With the Infection Prevention Committee, create and annually update the system-wide Infection Prevention Plan to prioritize risks and opportunities for improvement.
• Work with Quality and Risk to eliminate patient harm and risks related to infection prevention practices.
• Maintain hospital compliance with regulatory agencies (Joint Commission, OSHA, CDC, State of NH) by updating policies and procedures and educating staff on changes.
• Conduct regular surveillance rounds of the facility and affiliated outbuildings, documenting and resolving compliance issues.
• Develop, implement, and maintain a reporting system for communicable diseases, nosocomial and hospital-acquired infections, and reportable infection-related adverse events (e.g., to NH DHHS, NHSN, CMS, HCA).
• Investigate and identify trends in reported data, presenting analysis and recommendations for improvement to the Senior Leadership Team.
• Participate in Quality Improvement and Risk Management activities, including continuous readiness rounds, case reviews, RCA, and Failure Mode analysis for infection prevention.
• Provide clinical expertise to Quality, Risk, and Leadership in investigating patient safety and risk-associated issues through proactive risk assessments and best practice identification.
• Serve as Co-Chair of the Infection Prevention Committee with an Infectious Disease MD, carrying out the Infection Prevention Plan and communicating progress on performance and risk priorities.
• Maintain the Infection Prevention database, reporting trends of concern to Department Directors with recommendations for improvement.
• Assess the organization’s implementation of the Infection Prevention Plan using data, direct observation, and Environment of Care and Surveillance rounds.
• Educate staff, physician leaders, medical staff, and providers on Infection Prevention standards, goals, and plans to ensure compliance and engagement.
• Assist in maintaining current Departmental Exposure Control manuals and keep accurate, organized records.
• With the Medical Director, oversee dialysis and apheresis programs performed by a contracted vendor, including quarterly review meetings, monthly water culture monitoring, and equipment surveillance.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive hand hygiene program that meets or exceeds organizational goals, driving compliance through education and empowerment campaigns.
• Maintain a hand hygiene database, reporting trends of concern to Department Directors and utilizing physician resources to ensure compliance.
• Develop and implement an annual Influenza Vaccination Program for all staff, collaborating with HR to enforce mask policies for non-immunized employees and conducting regular surveillance for compliance.
• Facilitate optimization of antibiotic use with Pharmacy, Physician leadership, and microbiology staff as an active member of Antibiotic Stewardship Efforts and related committees.
• Represent Parkland on the state-led Infection Prevention Committee through the NH Hospital Association.
• Support employee health requirements, including immunizations, fit testing, and exposure management for bloodborne pathogens or hazardous materials, maintaining accurate records.
• Assist Department Directors and Managers in developing, implementing, and updating infection control practices and staff competency within their departments.
• Execute the program with minimal supervision, performing proactive development and monitoring of action plans, regular campus-wide rounding, and orientation for new hires and providers.
• Provide ongoing and annual education related to Infection Prevention, monitoring effectiveness and adjusting tools as needed.
• With the Quality Department and Department Leadership, coordinate the house-wide Sepsis program.
• Adhere to Parkland Medical Center standards for patient safety, customer service, confidentiality, compliance, attendance, and continuing education.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing or other health-related field.
• At least one year of experience in the clinical field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Data analysis skills, including managing data, creating reports, and identifying trends.
• Demonstrated ability to facilitate process improvement initiatives.
• Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
