Job Summary
The Manager, Impact Finance position will join a collaborative team focused on connecting public and private capital to social and environmental impact. To advance that goal, the Impact Finance team conducts applied research and develops, pilots, and scales financial models, structures, and products that bridge the needs of communities, governments, service providers, investors, and other stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of projects, workplans, timelines, budgets, deliverables, and internal coordination processes.
- Plan and facilitate meetings, interviews, working sessions, and regular project calls; prepare agendas, materials, notes, and follow-up items.
- Create and edit high-quality client deliverables, including memos, reports, Excel analyses, financial models, PowerPoint presentations, and decision materials.
- Review work prepared student fellows or project team members, providing feedback and quality control.
- Lead or support research on markets, policies, funding sources, evidence-based interventions, project economics, stakeholders, and sector trends relevant to impact finance projects.
- Collect, analyze, synthesize, and summarize quantitative and qualitative information; translate findings into clear recommendations for internal and external audiences.
- Prepare literature reviews, landscape scans, issue briefs, written analyses, and other research deliverables that are concise, accurate, and actionable.
- Support project development by defining project scope, target populations or beneficiaries, impact goals, potential outcomes, implementation considerations, and measurement approaches.
- Build, maintain, and interpret Excel-based financial and cost-benefit models to assess project economics, cash flows, scenarios, sensitivities, risks, benefits, and potential financing structures.
- Apply sound analytical judgment to identify data needs, evaluate assumptions, document methodologies, and communicate implications of model outputs.
- Manage relationships and workstreams with clients, funders, public agencies, investors, service providers, environmental organizations, community partners, and other stakeholders.
- Communicate complex financial, policy, and impact concepts in a clear and accessible way for various audiences.
- Contribute to business development, including prospect research, concept notes, proposals, scopes of work, budgets, and presentation materials.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen the Impact Finance practice, including new project models, repeatable tools, templates, research products, and partnerships.
- Collaborate with Institute colleagues across Impact Investing, Impact Strategy, and Operations teams.
Qualifications
- Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to gather information from multiple sources, evaluate evidence, identify implications, and make practical recommendations.
- Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple workstreams, deadlines, stakeholders, and deliverables with attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including comfort working with data, formulas, assumptions, and structured models. Financial modeling experience is strongly valued.
- Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint and the ability to develop polished, client-ready presentations and visual summaries.
- Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear memos, reports, recommendations, and client materials.
Priorities
- Master’s degree or higher in business, finance, economics, public policy, environmental management, sustainability, urban planning, or a related field.
- Four to six years of progressively responsible experience in finance, consulting, impact investing, community development finance, conservation or environmental finance, public policy, research, or a related field.
- Experience in impact finance, conservation finance, nature-based solutions, environmental markets, climate finance, natural infrastructure, land or water conservation, ecosystem services, or related fields.
- Experience developing financial models, investment analyses, cost-benefit analyses, cash-flow projections, scenario analyses, internal-rate-of-return analyses, or other finance tools.
- Experience facilitating meetings with clients, funders, investors, community partners, and other stakeholders.
- Supervisory, mentoring, or team-leadership experience, including experience supporting junior staff or student fellows.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a highly motivated, innovative, and entrepreneurial team.
