About the role

Hennepin County's Transportation Operations department is seeking multiple permanent, year-round Highway Maintenance Operators. These positions will be responsible for preserving and maintaining the county's road systems through a regular highway maintenance program to ensure safe and convenient use of the county's highway system by the traveling public. These positions include snow and ice removal, bituminous overlay, milling operations, crack sealing, tree and brush removal, concrete repair, and drainage.

Responsibilities

  • Work with traffic control for work zones; layout of traffic control signs, coning in the work zone, and flagging operations following the Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) field manual.
  • Operate a variety of equipment in hauling, spreading, or applying road materials.
  • Assist with construction resurfacing, rubbish hauling, and repair operations.
  • Perform ice and snow control with designated equipment including snowplows.
  • Rake and spread asphalt, patch streets, and seal pavement joints.

Requirements

  • One or more years of experience in one of the following:
    • Road construction and/or road maintenance.
    • Operation of a commercial motor vehicle over 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW).
    • Operation and maintenance of farm equipment.
    • Building and heavy construction industry.
  • Valid Class B driver's license with air brake endorsement.
  • Valid Class A driver's license with a fifth wheel hitch qualification, air brake, and tanker endorsements must be obtained within one year of employment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Availability to work various shifts including days, evenings, overnights, holidays, and weekend hours.
  • Overtime will be required occasionally during summer/winter operations.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment in the field.
  • Ability to interact effectively and tactfully with the public, supervisors, and peers.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a training program in heavy equipment operation and/or highway maintenance (nice to have).
  • Experience working in a government public works agency (nice to have).
  • Experience working as part of a team or work group (nice to have).
  • Experience operating a snowplow (nice to have).
  • Knowledge of safe operation of equipment used in roadway maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe and proper use of various hand and power tools.

Pay & schedule

  • Salary: $63,329.84 - $80,192.41 annually.
  • Location: Public Works Facility at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, Minnesota, 55340. No public transportation to this facility.
  • Summer hours: 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 4 days a week.
  • Winter hours: 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Overtime required occasionally during summer/winter operations.
  • Various shifts required including days, evenings, overnights, holidays, and weekend hours.
