About the role

The Manager, Engineering provides technical leadership and supervision to support project demands while maintaining a limited project workload aligned with overall business needs. This role offers technical oversight and guidance to engineers within the office, collaborates closely with the Director of Engineering to achieve department goals, and ensures projects are delivered with high quality, efficiency, and technical excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Accomplish human resource objectives by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; planning and reviewing compensation actions; enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Achieve operational objectives by contributing engineering information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews; preparing and completing action plans; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving problems; completing audits; identifying trends; determining administrative system improvements; implementing change.
  • Provide oversight, technical, and procedural direction to ensure proper engineering processes are followed throughout projects.
  • Develop, nurture, and maintain trusted relationships with senior-level engineering, managers, and executives with current or prospective clients.
  • Coordinate work with engineering offices where shared resources might reside.
  • Work with the department to cross-train employees on multi-client standards for efficiency and scale, fostering a team concept.
  • Actively coordinate with Business Development to ensure a consistent pipeline and backlog of workflow.
  • Confidently present technical solutions to key customers, respond in real time to technical concerns, and answer questions in a knowledgeable and articulate manner.
  • Delegate, plan, prioritize, and forecast upcoming engineering requirements/needs, including non-job-related training schedules.
  • Direct and/or participate in client meetings/job site visits to collect or deliver design and engineering data.
  • Provide technical support for quotes/estimating related to engineering, project management, and client management input.
  • Review and approve employee time sheets and expense statements for accuracy.
  • Ensure project cost, quality, and schedule requirements are met.
  • Conduct audits to ensure all design packages follow Qualus’ QA/QC process.
  • Oversee the internal training program by identifying staff needs and coordinating resources that will perform training.
  • Attend Project Kickoff meetings to discuss work scope, project specifications, budgets, schedules, and safety requirements with the project team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, ABET accredited preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering Management or MBA is a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years in management within the energy sector.
  • Experience performing substation physical design, protection and control design, and/or power systems studies.
  • Professional Engineering license preferred.
  • Strong communication skills able to relate to all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of both business and technical terminology.
  • Strong analytical and computer skills.
  • Strong decision-making skills.
  • Excellent demonstrated communication (written and verbal), people, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain financial plans.
  • Strong sense of urgency, organizational skills, and attention to detail while prioritizing tasks for efficiency and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to independently work with mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to independently apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing duties of this job, the employee will be required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects and tools up to 75% of the time.
  • Frequent use of a computer and smartphone for communication.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
