Lead a single team delivering components of distributed systems. Translate goals into a 1–2 quarter execution plan, set coding, testing, and scalability practices, and provide hands-on oversight of performance tuning and load/perf testing.
Responsibilities
- System Design & Architecture – System Scalability:
- Provide oversight on the development of distributed-system components, including distributed state management tools.
- Monitor and enable optimization of code and systems for large-scale data processing.
- Guide the team to implement scalability requirements for assigned components.
- Coach the team to leverage data-plane platforms for large-scale data retrieval, storage, and processing.
- Ensure accurate implementation and execution of performance and load testing.
- System Design & Architecture – System Reliability Design:
- Guide the team in building fault-tolerant systems capable of withstanding in-service updates by implementing redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
- Design components to handle service disruptions effectively.
- Coach the team on handling network unreliability using retries, circuit breakers, and timeouts.
- System Design & Architecture – System Reliability Performance:
- Guide the team to implement testing and alarming configurations for detecting and addressing issues.
- Ensure support for recovery efforts by reviewing and aligning runbooks and operational procedures.
- Coach the team on building and customizing dashboards, telemetry systems, and alerting mechanisms.
- System Design & Architecture – Correctness / Availability:
- Manage the implementation and design of functional requirements and testing for features.
- Coach the team on implementing test scenarios (e.g., fault-injection, brown-out) to evaluate system correctness.
- Guide the implementation of data replication and synchronization techniques to maintain data integrity and availability.
- Operational Troubleshooting & Incident Management:
- Lead team efforts in diagnosing, debugging, and resolving issues in system components.
- Ensure protocols are followed to prevent customer interruptions during issue resolution.
- Manage the team in implementing automation scripts and tooling for troubleshooting.
- Create schedules and manage operational support rotations.
- Compliance & Security:
- Manage the team’s implementation of robust security measures, including encryption and access controls in multi-tenant environments.
- Oversee execution of remediation plans to address security gaps.
- Review documentation to ensure cloud infrastructure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Automation & Change Management:
- Lead the maintenance of automation scripts and tools (e.g., Infrastructure as Code) to manage cloud infrastructure.
- Coach the team on change-management plans for patching, updating, and rolling back applications.
- Planning & Execution:
- Create and own the execution plan for the team’s work and multiple projects, monitoring timelines and budgets.
- Delegate work across the team and help prioritize tasks.
- Identify resource needs and adapt plans based on changing priorities.

- Strengthen collaborative partnerships across teams to align on expectations and shared objectives.
- Guide team members to build relationships with business leaders, stakeholders, and customers.
- Practice active listening and ask insightful questions to promote an inclusive culture.
- Problem Solving:
- Lead the team to identify and address moderately complex operational and technical issues.
- Direct the team to analyze data from multiple sources to troubleshoot errors.
- Continuous Learning:
- Actively seek learning opportunities for yourself and the team to enhance knowledge and skills.
- Use feedback and training to elevate personal and team skills.
- Identify skill gaps and support team members in learning opportunities.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Identify and recommend improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness of processes and workflows.
- Review and provide feedback on team members’ ideas for alternative approaches.
- Performance and Development:
- Coach and provide direction to team members in alignment with performance management processes.
- Facilitate goal-setting discussions to align individual goals with broader team goals.
- Identify development opportunities to help team members improve performance.
- Contribute to the talent acquisition pipeline by leading candidate interviews and assessing promotion eligibility.
