Responsibilities
- Oversees the laboratory section's administrative, financial, quality, and personnel management functions.
- Provides general supervision and administrative support to the laboratory section.
- Keeps abreast of current advances in the field and acts to evaluate and implement changes as appropriate.
- Confers with leadership regularly concerning laboratory testing and operations.
- Participates in the development and administration of an effective Quality Assurance program measuring the critical aspects of service.
- Makes recommendations for implementation of new products/equipment.
- Sets and models standards of behavior, creating an atmosphere of teamwork and respect.
- Manages the design and implementation of improvement actions.
- Ensures compliance with safety, infection control, and other regulatory policies.
- Coordinates with appropriate parties to provide customer feedback and information.
- Ensures the existence of adequate emergency and/or backup plans.
- Communicates policies. Oversees compliance with and effectiveness of departmental and section procedures and recommends revision as needed.
- Supports strategic initiatives. Collaborates with leadership to develop goals and objectives for the laboratory section that align with departmental goals.
- Manages attendance and payroll.
- Manages operational budget by appropriately using sub-codes, budget distribution across sub-codes, and expenses management to meet section budget.
- Evaluates the impact of testing volume changes and recommends budget adjustments as appropriate.
- Manages section manpower by ensuring the productive use of staff, setting limits for overtime, and monitoring usage as applicable.
- Monitors and evaluates results of the Quality Assurance program, adequacy of indicators, and compliance of staff with the program.
- Manages the design and implementation of improvement actions.
- Proactively seeks information to improve work processes.
- Researches and implements solutions to problems in a timely manner.
- Participates in educating clients and laboratory staff regarding client services as needed.
- Reviews assigned section’s business reports for accuracy and initiates corrections.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline required.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- 3 years of related experience, 2 years of which at a management level required.
- or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Ability to lead a large, diverse team and manage personnel issues required.
- Ability to lead change, organize and engage teams, and delegate responsibility required.
- Ability to travel to multiple sites, as needed, required.
- Skilled in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, decision-making, negotiation, and collaboration required.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and effectively change priorities required.
- Ability to develop business proposals/reports, analyze data, and improve efficiency required.
- Strong oral and written communication skills required.
