Manager, Chemistry Lab - 40 hours/week, day shift
About the Role
Under the general guidance of the Medical Director and Administrative Director, this position provides administrative and technical leadership as well as overall management for a Laboratory Section. Responsibilities include instrument and test selection, training, procedure review, personnel hiring, evaluation and disciplinary actions, staff development, competency assessment, and budget development and monitoring. The Manager ensures fulfillment of the department mission, as well as NHC and BILH missions, working independently with advanced technical and administrative skills.
Coverage includes occasional weekends and holidays.
Responsibilities
- Operational Functions
- Prepare and maintain policies and procedures for the section.
- Provide guidance and resolution for clinical problem solving (e.g., instrumentation, equipment, test systems, clinical correlation, backup systems, and system performance).
- Oversee implementation of new instruments, methodologies, and tests.
- Develop workflow to simplify procedures and processes.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory agencies including JCAHO, CAP, OSHA, DPH, and NCCLS.
- Maintain adequate inventories of supplies to avoid emergency shortages.
- Perform duties of a medical technologist as required, with skills equal to senior technologists.
- Meet with the Medical Director and Administrative Director periodically to review department status.
- Personnel Functions
- Schedule colleagues to meet department workload within budgetary limits.
- Participate in employment interviews and recommend qualified candidates for vacancies.
- Follow NHC and departmental policies for orienting and training new colleagues.
- Ensure all colleagues fulfill annual mandatory requirements (competency, safety, education, etc.) and maintain documentation.
- Work with section managers to optimize staff utilization and facilitate cross-training.
- Discuss disciplinary concerns with the Administrative Director and conduct counseling or disciplinary sessions as needed.
- Prepare colleague performance appraisals, including past performance and new goals.
- Fiscal Management
- Prepare an annual budget with the Medical Director and Administrative Director.
- Monitor actual expenses against the budget and explain variances.
- Adjust operations as needed to optimize resources and enhance revenue.
- Quality Control/Quality Assurance
- Ensure accurate performance of test results by reviewing Quality Control and taking corrective action as needed.
- Participate in the laboratory Quality Assurance program for continuous quality improvement.
- Value and respond to customer feedback by taking corrective action or improving suboptimal services.
- Administration
- Ensure optimal utilization of staff and space.
- Set priorities and organize work time to meet them.
- Improve services by collaborating with department managers and technologists.
- Support new ideas and changes within the department.
- Adapt positively to change and work collaboratively to effect it.
- Keep colleagues updated on current changes, memos, and miscellaneous information.
- Complete and report on special assignments within agreed-upon timelines.
- Communicate through regularly scheduled laboratory meetings and encourage team input.
- Maintain a productive and cooperative working atmosphere.
- Work collaboratively to solve problems, improve processes, and integrate services within and across departments.
- Develop a proactive plan to meet future departmental and NHC needs.
- General Expectations
- Make independent judgments and decisions to support section operations.
- Incorporate BILH Standards of Behavior and Mission Statement into daily activities.
- Comply with all NHC and department-specific policies.
- Follow established safety procedures as outlined in the Laboratory Safety and Infection Control Manuals.
- Establish and maintain courteous and effective interactions with patients, physicians, management, visitors, and healthcare team members.
- Demonstrate an understanding of job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.
- Commit to meeting and exceeding customer needs and adhering to customer service standards.
- Stay current in management and scientific knowledge by completing 10 hours of continuing education annually.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science / Medical Technology or Biological Science required.
- Work Experience:
- 5 or more years of full-time experience required.
- 7 or more years of experience with progressive role development highly preferred.
- 3 or more years of experience in a related Supervisory or Managerial role required.
- License/Registration/Certification: ASCP certified generalist or categorical Technologist or equivalent accreditation required.
- Other:
- Demonstrates autonomy, critical thinking skills, and the ability to oversee all shift operations.
- Capability and capacity to lead multiple projects and assist senior leadership with high-complexity initiatives.
- Maintains fiscal responsibility for the department budget.
- Experience and high proficiency with computers, including web-based applications and Microsoft Excel.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Strategic thinking, decision-making, leadership, and organizational planning.
- Knowledge of clinical tests and standards necessary to perform complex tests and accurately report results.
- Analytic ability to perform complex tests, interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate instruments, etc.
- Ability to concentrate for long periods, utilize good judgment, work accurately under pressure, and handle stress to meet deadlines.
- Manual dexterity and acuity necessary to prepare specimens, solutions, screen specimens, and operate instrumentation and computers.
- Interpersonal, verbal, and written English language skills sufficient to exchange information with physicians and colleagues.
Pay
The annual base salary range for this position is $110,000.00 USD - $135,000.00 USD. Actual compensation is determined based on factors such as seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
