Manager, Laboratory, Full Time, Day Shift
About the role
Adventist Health Ukiah Valley maintains responsibility for the overall operation of the clinical laboratory in consultation with and under the direction of Medical Directors (Pathologists) and the Regional Clinical Laboratory Directors. This role develops, monitors, and provides leadership for financial, contracting, regulatory, accreditation, and client services policies and procedures for the clinical/anatomic laboratories. The position ensures appropriate instrumentation or test methodologies, develops and maintains a Quality Assurance (QA) program, and supervises assigned personnel.
Responsibilities
- Manages day-to-day operations of the laboratory unit/department, maintaining accountability for outcomes and satisfaction.
- Facilitates effective organization of staff, equipment, supplies, and time through delegation of tasks.
- Prepares technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized, and test results.
- Coordinates the preparation of reports and analyses, setting forth progress, adverse trends, and recommendations.
- Participates in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques.
- Plans, develops, and presents workshops to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and a safe working environment.
- Develops and implements quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment, and compliance with federal regulations.
- Provides advanced problem-solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, and verification of specimen quality and test results.
- Recommends and develops quality cost containment programs for laboratory services (e.g., staffing patterns, utilization).
- Monitors Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Safety, and Inspection Control practices to ensure compliance with internal/external regulations.
- Reviews patient and quality control results for shifts and trends, monitoring quality of departmental functions.
- Manages, coordinates, and evaluates all elements of laboratory services in assigned specialties (Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Phlebotomy, Specimen Processing, Immunology, Pathology).
- Interprets accrediting agencies' standards or guidelines, translating requirements into policies and procedures, and initiating corrective action as needed.
- Provides guidance and oversight for consistency in hiring practices, compensation, promotions, and disciplinary actions across all laboratories.
- Trains, supervises, and schedules senior laboratory assistants, laboratory assistants/phlebotomists, assigning staff based on skills and patient acuity.
- Adjusts daily work assignments to meet departmental demands and performs evaluations, promotions, salary recommendations, disciplinary actions, and terminations as required.
- Oversees financial aspects of the laboratory, including preparing capital and operational budgets, monitoring budget variances, and reporting financial performance indicators.
- Collaborates with Laboratory Directors, Supervisors, and Finance to ensure proper billing, accounting, auditing, CPT coding, and Medicare/Medicaid compliance.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, biological sciences, chemical sciences, or allied health technologies or equivalent: Required.
- Master's Degree: Preferred.
- Five years' clinical laboratory experience: Preferred.
- One year's leadership experience: Preferred.
- Valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license in state of employment: Required in CA.
- Current certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency for Labs (NCA): Preferred in CA and HI.

Pay
The estimated base pay for this position is $126,080 to $189,121. Additional individual compensation may be available through differentials, extra shift incentives, bonuses, etc. Base pay is only a portion of the total rewards package, and a comprehensive benefits program is available for qualifying positions.
Schedule
Full-time regular, 8-hour shifts.
