About the role
The Manager of Antimicrobial Stewardship (AS) reports to the Director, Antimicrobial Stewardship. The Manager is responsible for development and management of the functions of the antimicrobial stewardship team, covering the community hospitals across BILH under the direction of the Director, Medical Director and Chief Infection Prevention Officer.
Responsibilities
- Practices pharmacy with a focus on antimicrobial management in accordance with the laws, rules and regulation of the Massachusetts and New Hampshire Boards of Pharmacy, Departments of Public Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and in accordance with established policies and procedures. Maintains certification and credentials in accordance with the Board of Pharmacy and submits proof of certification annually
- Oversees day-to-day activities of the assigned ASPs (ASP1-4) assigned to provide services to community hospitals. Responsible for hiring, termination, corrective action and annual performance reviews for direct reports.
- In coordination with the Director, AS, maintains a standardized in-house training program for team members on the basic knowledge and skills of AS including, but not limited to, topics related to AS program annual goals, antimicrobial utilization tracking standards, guideline development and maintenance, impact of AS programs on health outcomes and state and national regulatory requirements/reporting. Develops and trains staff on new telehealth process for AS to community hospitals and defines in-person activities in conjunction with the Director and Medical Director, AS and the Chief Infection Prevention Officer.
- Working closely with the Director and Medical Director, AS the Manager is responsible for team planning, hospital-based implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of local activities across the assigned community hospitals in alignment with the larger BILH AS team to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Participates and ensures compliance with the antimicrobial formulary across the assigned community hospitals. Integrates antimicrobial practice, including pre-prescriptive approval and audit/feedback, across assigned community institutions using both .
- Maintains and facilitates team knowledge of CDC National Health Safety Network (NHSN), state Departments of Public Health and federal regulatory requirements (including TJC, DNV, CMS) in order to function as liaison to community hospitals in these areas related to AS for BILH. Manages the local teams efforts in required reporting, troubleshooting and validation of the CDC NHSN Antibiotic Use and Antibiotic Resistance metrics for community hospitals covered by direct reports.
- Serves as a representative on the BILH Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Infectious Diseases Subcommittee to assist with antimicrobial evaluation, guideline development and pharmacist led interventions. Serves as alternate for Director, AS on BILH P&T Committee as requested.
- Works with the direct reports to assess current local community hospital education materials and directs development of new educational materials as needed.
- Ensures appropriate coverage of antimicrobial stewardship activities at assigned BILH facilities as necessary. May supervise staff from other sites to assist with vacancy coverage and/or fulfill parts of the system Antimicrobial Stewardship responsibilities in the setting of vacancies. Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education: Doctor of Pharmacy from accredited College/University
- Licensure, Certification & Registration: MA and/or NH Pharmacist License
- Doctoral degree in Pharmacy (PharmD) required.
- Board Certification in Infectious Disease Practice.
- Certification in Antimicrobial Stewardship from a national accrediting provider such as the Society of ID Pharmacists, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, or the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.
- Experience: 7+ years in clinical practice in antimicrobial stewardship and/or infectious disease pharmacy
- Experience in direct supervision of employees
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Experience in oversight of AS and/or ID pharmacists preferred
- Knowledge and ability to work in antimicrobial stewardship activities planning and successfully implementing projects
- Understanding of CDC NHSN (National Healthcare Safety Network) metrics related to antibiotic use and resistance and reporting. Knowledge of TJC and DNV requirements and state and local DPH regulations related to antimicrobial usage, stewardship and reporting.
- Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
Pay Range
$186,000.00 USD – $210,000.00 USD
