Mammography Technologist

Works under the supervision of leadership in direct patient care, performing screening and diagnostic mammograms. Operates under the direction of the Radiologist during breast biopsies, needle localizations, and other interventional breast procedures. Reviews and evaluates images for diagnostic quality, ensuring radiation safety and compliance with government regulations.

Responsibilities

• Obtains patient history, prior images, reports, and other supportive role information.
• Performs and critiques patient screening and diagnostic mammography examinations as requested by patient and/or provider.
• Prepares patients for procedures, positions patient and equipment, and uses appropriate technical factors to obtain mammogram images.
• Performs contrast-enhanced mammography and automated breast ultrasound for dense tissue evaluation.
• Assists in Stereotactic Core Needle Breast Biopsy: prepares the patient, sets up sterile field, arranges instruments and supplies, and assists the radiologist with skin preparation and needle placement.
• Reviews and completes patient exams and charges within the radiology information system.
• Performs quality assurance procedures and maintains records to meet regulatory guidelines.
• Serves as a preceptor, as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Completion of a Radiologic Technology program (Required).
• Six months of mammography experience (Preferred).
• Registered Technologist (R.T.) certification (Required upon hire).
• Mammography (M) certification (Required upon hire).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Required upon hire).
• Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed.

Skills and Abilities

• Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Calibrating equipment, answering telephone, fine motor skills, inputting data, speaking clearly, knowledge of body mechanics, and BLS. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
• Interpersonal Skills: Effective communication and ability to interact with patients, staff, visitors, and physicians. Must work well as a team member.
• Essential Physical Requirements: Walking, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 50 lbs, restraining, kneeling, standing, moving equipment, and speaking.
• Essential Mental Abilities: Manipulate numbers, interpret data, explain procedures, evaluate situations, adaptability, reading, and organizational skills.
• Essential Sensory Requirements: Visual skills, hearing, and speaking.
• Exposure to Hazards: Radiation, body fluids, needle puncture, and hazardous materials.
• Demonstrates and maintains current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for patients of all age groups.
