About the role

The Maintenance Trainee position is designed to provide hands-on learning and practical experience in routine grounds maintenance, landscaping, and the operation of landscaping maintenance equipment. Upon successful completion of the program, the Maintenance Trainee will be eligible to apply for a Maintenance Worker I position.

Responsibilities

  • Assist maintenance crews in routine grounds maintenance including mowing, weed-eating, and fertilizing lawns, and maintaining flower and shrub beds.
  • Weed and clean flower and shrub beds, manage litter control, edge and clean walks, and perform other related tasks as required.
  • Operate landscaping maintenance equipment such as walk-behind or push-type mowers, weed-eaters, backpack blowers, and edgers.
  • Operate standard size pick-ups and/or sedans with hand and foot control.
  • Work in high motor and pedestrian traffic areas.
  • Achieve on-the-job training and classroom courses to learn techniques and concepts.
  • Assist in assessing and responding to maintenance issues, developing rapport with citizens, and inspiring trust by caring for the City.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License.
  • Pass the City’s pre-employment background and driving abstract.
  • Steel-toed shoes on first day of employment - furnished by the employee.
  • Availability to work set schedule.
  • Reliable and consistent form of daily transportation to and from work.
  • Computer proficiency and smartphone proficiency (City-issued device).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Pass a driving abstract.

Successful completion of the program will result in eligibility for a Maintenance Worker I position, which includes an increase in pay and benefits.
