Maintenance Worker (Seasonal).

About the role

This is a temporary seasonal appointment intended for work that lasts less than 6 months or 1,040 hours per service year. The position is expected to terminate upon completion of the seasonal work. The agency may non-competitively rehire eligible temporary seasonal workers in subsequent years if they work fewer than 1,040 hours in their service year.

Responsibilities

• Assist with repairs by removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems (e.g., traps, pipes, faucets, drains).
• Use and maintain tools and equipment; record inventory and maintenance; document and report equipment damage or loss.
• Operate farm-type tractors and towed or attached equipment to maintain grounds, dikes, canals, levees, marshes, fire prevention/maintenance areas, road medians, or perform farming functions.
• Repair by replacing, adjusting, or cleaning defective external combustion parts or components.
• Develop action plans to complete facility and land management operations and earth-moving projects to prevent injury and equipment damage.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
• Suitability for employment determined by a background investigation.
• Official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform may be required.
• Individuals assigned male at birth after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service (SSS.gov).
• Must hold and maintain a valid state driver’s license to operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of official duties.
• May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 08/18/2026 will be considered. Applicants must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations. While no specific amount of experience, education, or training is required, candidates must demonstrate a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire to be rated qualified.

Qualifications will first be evaluated against the screen-out element: Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. Experience may include:

• Maintaining station grounds using mowers, weed eaters, tractors, and herbicides.
• Maintaining restrooms, roads, parking areas, boat ramps, etc.
• Aiding in the installation/repair of cabinets, fences, siding, etc.
• Assisting in mixing and pouring cement.
• Operating gasoline and diesel vehicles.
• Washing and fueling vehicles and equipment.
• Winterizing refuge buildings.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and may provide valuable training for paid employment.

Benefits

• Eligible for annual and sick leave.
• Temporary employees working full-time or part-time (at least 130 hours per month) for at least 90 days may qualify for health benefits through the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) program, with the same government contribution as full-time permanent employees. Employees are responsible for the employee share of the premium.
• After separating from federal employment, employees may continue FEHB coverage under the Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC) option, paying the full premium plus a 2% administration fee.
