City of Fayetteville is recruiting for a Maintenance Worker in the Public Services Department. This role performs semi-skilled and skilled work in construction, maintenance, repair, and related activities for streets, stormwater systems, and other City facilities.
Responsibilities
- Clean, maintain, and repair equipment, roads, alleyways, right-of-ways, streets, open spaces, City cemeteries, parking lots, curbs, sidewalks, and other City facilities.
- Perform street construction and maintenance activities; dig and maintain ditches; backfill trenches and holes; install storm drainage pipes; participate in curb and sidewalk projects; repair and replace brick pavers.
- Perform grounds maintenance activities including mowing lawns, routine landscaping, and hauling debris and trash.
- Prepare ball fields for use, participate in playground installation and maintenance; repair and maintain landscape areas in and around work sites.
- Perform janitorial functions and similar duties in assigned area; load and unload trucks.
- Set up and take down construction site signage and barricades for traffic control; follow safety regulations.
- Participate in activities required during seasonal weather events.
- Operate and maintain a variety of construction and street maintenance equipment, gardening equipment, and hand tools; ensure security of equipment.
- Maintain garbage, yard waste, and recycling carts; collect recyclable material; build, deliver, and collect carts from City facilities, residents, and other locations as needed.
- Operate pressure washer and battery-operated street sweeper; pick up and deliver vehicles and parts; perform minor repairs to furniture and fixtures.
Requirements
- Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be six months of experience performing field maintenance work within the assigned area of work.
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
- Must be willing to:
- Be on call 24/7 and work when called in.
- Frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift weights exceeding 50 pounds but not more than 80 pounds.
- Pass a physical abilities test.
- Work outdoors at least 10-12 hours a day or night if needed.
- Walk, stand, sit, stoop, or kneel for extended periods of time.
- Work in field environments with exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, confined workplaces, and inclement weather conditions; work around medium construction equipment.

Benefits
- Health and Dental Insurance: Comprehensive and affordable coverage for employees working 30+ hours per week. Coverage extends to eligible dependents. The City pays a portion of the premium, deducted pre-tax. Eligibility begins on the 1st day of the month following 30 days of service.
- Employer-Paid Leave:
- Vacation Leave: Accrued from the first day of employment, based on years of service and scheduled hours.
- Sick Leave: Accrued from the first day of employment; full-time employees accrue 8 hours per month. Sick leave accumulates without limits and may be used toward creditable service upon retirement.
- Holidays: 12 paid holidays per calendar year (13 if Christmas falls on a Wednesday).
- Bereavement Leave: 24 hours per calendar year to mourn or attend a funeral or memorial service of a family member.
- Retirement: Participation in the NC Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System. Employees contribute 6% of gross salary on a tax-deferred basis. Membership begins upon employment for those working 20+ hours per week.
- Deferred Compensation Plans: Supplemental retirement savings programs (NC 401(k) and NC 457 plans) for employees working 20+ hours per week. The City contributes 4% of base salary to the NC 401(k) account.
