Under regular supervision, operates and performs garbage collection using a variety of medium and heavy equipment trucks for the Sanitation department. Reports to a Public Works Supervisor.
Schedule
- Monday – Thursday: 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Friday: 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Responsibilities
- Operates and performs maintenance using a variety of medium and heavy equipment and trucks utilized in sanitation or street activities.
- Performs semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of Public Works systems.
- Operates heavy equipment and trucks under various conditions in a safe and effective manner.
- Performs all duties in conformance with safety and security standards.
- Drives trucks and loads fallen tree limbs, roadside trash, and stumps; delivers refuse to the landfill.
- Operates trucks of various sizes and weights for loading, hauling, and unloading equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; reports defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
- Maintains records of areas serviced, addresses, and items picked up for billing purposes.
- Provides on-call duty coverage during non-working hours as per duty roster.
- Performs manual labor including loading and unloading supplies and equipment, installing pipe, shaping ditches, placing and grading stone and asphalt, and gathering, loading, and disposing of debris.
- Receives written work orders or verbal instructions from the Public Works Supervisor or Public Works Director.
- Repairs streets and sidewalks with asphalt, cold patching materials, and concrete using tools such as shovels, hand rollers, trowels, levels, and long-handled tamps.
- Operates snow removal equipment to maintain streets, sidewalks, and driveways.
- Hand washes vehicles.
Skills
- Operates and uses a variety of equipment, tools, and supplies including:
- Power saws, shaving machines, spray guns, staple guns, wrench sets, clamps, roll carts, chipping machines, chain saws, weed eaters, pitchforks, brooms, rakes, leaf blowers
- Motorized vehicles and equipment: front loader truck, dump truck, pickup truck, backhoe, tractor, mower, edger, pruning shears
- Tools: saws, pumps, compressors, common hand and portable power tools, shovels, mobile radios, phones, riveting machines, blowtorches, chisels, soldering irons, air compressors
- Miscellaneous: clips, fixtures, graphics instructions, manuals, patterns, rules, templates, pressure sprayers, pressure washers, picks, sled hammers, trenchers, concrete saws
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Two years of experience involving the use of medium and heavy trucks and equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license
- Commercial driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within six months
