Maintenance Worker II - Grounds - WVU Tech (Beckley)

West Virginia University of Technology in Beckley, WV is seeking a Maintenance Worker II - Grounds to maintain the exterior appearance of campus grounds and assist with interior maintenance tasks.

About the role

This position provides support services to maintain the exterior appearance of the grounds, adhering to established procedures, techniques, and safety requirements. Some judgment is required to interpret instructions.

Responsibilities

• Grounds Maintenance:
  • Clean and maintain the exterior appearance of institutional buildings by raking, removing, and disposing of leaves and debris.
  • Clean gutters, culverts, and drainage areas; sweep, shovel, and remove snow, ice, slush, and mud from entryways and sidewalks.
  • Spread salt and cinders on public passageways.
  • Care for lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, and trimming/edging around flower beds, walks, and walls.
  • Haul or spread topsoil and straw over seeded soil.
  • Operate hand and power tools such as rakes, shovels, lawn mowers, and weed-eaters.
  • Perform winter duties, including snow removal using shovels, salt spreaders, or plow trucks.
  • Operate, service, and maintain grounds equipment, including trucks, tractors, seeders, riding mowers, snow removal equipment, skid loaders, and tilt-bed trucks.
  • Dig holes and trenches; spread and level dirt, gravel, and concrete for traffic signs, irrigation/drainage systems, and concrete structures.
  • Remove weeds from shrubs and flowerbeds; wash graffiti from exterior walls and sidewalks.
  • Resolve pest and insect problems across campus.
  • Perform general tree maintenance.
  • Collect trash from exterior trash cans and transport it to the trash compactor.
  • Attend training classes, seminars, and meetings to learn new techniques and stay current on safety requirements.
• Maintenance & Custodial:
  • Assist with general painting duties, including walls, ceilings, trim, and furniture using brushes, rollers, and low-pressure sprayers.
  • Patch and prepare surfaces for painting, including finishing drywall.
  • Relocate offices and classrooms by lifting, loading, and unloading furniture, file cabinets, and boxes using hand trucks, dollies, and box vans.
  • Move, set up, rearrange, and erect tables, chairs, platforms, bleachers, tents, and displays for events.
  • Clean and maintain building interiors, including classrooms, offices, laboratories, student housing, and public areas by sweeping, mopping, stripping, and waxing floors; vacuuming and shampooing carpets; dusting and polishing furniture; and washing walls, ceilings, doors, and windows.
  • Clean and disinfect bathrooms and kitchenettes, including walls, floors, lavatories, commodes, sinks, refrigerators, stoves, fixtures, and mirrors.
  • Change light bulbs; create work orders for repairs if needed.
  • Plunge toilets and floor drains to unclog them.
  • Replenish supplies such as toilet tissue, towels, and soap.
  • Unload, store, and rotate supplies; obtain signatures on deliveries.
  • Lock and unlock exterior and interior doors.
  • Operate hand and power tools such as dollies and hand trucks.
  • Collect and dispose of trash and litter; clean trash receptacles and assist sanitation vehicle operators.
  • Collect recyclable items and place them in appropriate storage locations.
• Other Duties:
  • Create work orders for detected repair issues.
  • Order supplies or report malfunctioning equipment.
  • Perform other assigned duties as directed.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience in:
  • General grounds maintenance and landscaping.
  • Commercial and/or residential cleaning.
  • Assisting with general trades maintenance.
• Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
• All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
• Valid Driver’s License.

• Ability to operate a computer and follow OSHA guidelines and codes.
• Knowledge of equipment, tools, parts, and materials.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality.
• Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Ability to rapidly learn policies and procedures.
• Ability to organize workflow and complete tasks in a timely manner.
• Ability to operate a state vehicle, climb ladders, and work in a lift 30 feet above the ground.
• Ability to lift materials over 75 pounds and perform physically demanding work (e.g., digging ditches, cleaning utility tunnels, moving heavy equipment, shoveling snow).
• Ability to bend, stoop, walk, and crawl; work in inclement weather and confined areas.
• Basic knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems.
• Ability to follow safety requirements and use proper safety equipment.
• Ability to perform routine maintenance (e.g., changing filters, replacing light bulbs, cleaning equipment).
• Ability to follow specific directions for general tasks.
• Ability to use chemicals such as penetrating oil, glue, coil cleaner, paints, thinners, and lubricants.
• Ability to handle/install insulating and filtration materials.
• Ability to assist higher-level trades technicians in facility repair and maintenance.
• Ability to operate power tools such as saws, drills, and jackhammers.
• Ability to erect and work from scaffolds, ladders, and man lifts.
• Ability to perform housekeeping duties on job sites and in the shop.
• Ability to clean and maintain tools.
