Maintenance Worker II

About the role

This is a full-time Maintenance Worker II role within the Greenways division. Employees may use hand and power tools such as drills, brooms, rakes, shovels and power washers. Tasks require employees to work outdoors for most of the workday in a variety of weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Cleans repair site of loose materials with a shovel, sledge hammer, or air hammer;
• operates a concrete saw to cut out damaged concrete;
• builds forms for bench pads, curb stops, and parking lot repair projects;
• compacts soil using tamper;
• poins out litter, delivers supplies, paints park equipment;
• mows and plants grass, rakes leaves, cleans parks after storms and special events;
• paints park benches and garbage cans, removes graffiti, plants, transplants, fertilizes, mulches, waters, and prunes City park grounds, shrubs, bushes, and trees;
• prunes shrubs using hand or electric pruners;
• removes weeds from around flowers and shrubs by hand or by using weed cutters;
• prepares soil by operating power or hand tools and equipment such as aerator, roller, rototiller, shovel, garden hoe, or rake;
• sows grass seed by hand or with mechanized equipment;
• unloads and lays out sod;
• delivers soil, compost, wood chips, and other materials to work site and shovels, rakes, and levels materials;
• rakes and mulches leaves.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required;
• Two (2) or more years of experience performing maintenance, construction, or repair work that includes operating related vehicles and equipment, including dump trucks;
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement and a safe driving record;
• Must obtain and maintain a State of Illinois Pesticide Operator's License within eighteen (18) months of employment;
• Must complete NIMS Incident Command training (ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800) within eighteen (18) months of employment.

Qualifications

• Strong ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, including through email;
• Proficiency in timekeeping and payroll platforms such as Executime and E-Suite;
• Considerable knowledge of safe operating procedures for hand and power tools used in asphalt and concrete maintenance and repair;
• Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in the care of flowers, shrubs, trees, lawns, and athletic fields;
• Understanding of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the use of tools, vehicles, and chemicals;
• Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions and apply them to work assignments with minimal supervision;
• Ability to interpret and apply safety instructions for chemical use (fertilizers, pesticides, etc.).

Skills

• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public;
• Skilled in the operation and routine maintenance of vehicles and motorized equipment requiring a CDL;
• Commitment to flexible scheduling, including availability for weekends, evenings, holidays, and overtime for emergencies, special events, projects, and snow/ice control operations.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
• Ability to move heavy objects (100 pounds or more) short distances;
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions such as extreme cold, high winds, rain, snow, sleet, high temperatures, humidity, and other uncomfortable conditions;
• Ability to use all equipment and power tools required to perform assigned tasks efficiently;
• Ability to focus on small and distant objects, recognize the depth of objects, lift, bend, kneel, sit, or stand for long periods of time, work in confined spaces, and work outdoors at night with limited lighting;
• Ability to work around chemicals, asphalt products, concrete, vehicle or equipment fumes, gasses, dust, and dirt while following safety guidelines;
• Ability to work on job sites with elevated noise levels and vibrations.

Supervision

Work is performed under the general direction of a supervisor or crew leader. Assignments may vary from day to day depending on the season and work requirements. Instructions, either verbal or written, are in the form of the project to be completed, with the employee responsible.

Pay

Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for range. Salary range is $35.7990- $41.8850/HOUR.

Schedule

This position requires both scheduled and unscheduled overtime for emergencies, special projects, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
