About the role

The Streets and Traffic Control Divisions maintain city streets, storm sewers, sidewalks, signage, marking, and traffic signals. The crew is also responsible for snow removal during winter weather events.

Responsibilities

  • Aids in culvert repairs, keeps ditches clean, and performs snow removal and salt/sand distribution, ensuring safety, thoroughness, and professionalism.
  • Maintains awareness of tool and equipment operations and ensures compliance with safety procedures.
  • Operates various tools and equipment, adhering to safety protocols.
  • Maintains an "on-call" status on assigned schedules, maintaining professionalism.
  • Assists in preventative and corrective maintenance programs and schedules for equipment.
  • Rakes, rolls, and smoothes asphalt, following safety procedures and using appropriate safety equipment.
  • Assists with concrete repair projects, including installing forms, laying bedrock, using the "wacker," smoothing, sweeping, and sawing grooves, following safety procedures and using appropriate safety equipment.
  • Completes cleanup and project shut-down activities, ensuring thoroughness.
  • Assists with other street repair activities as requested, ensuring safety and following appropriate procedures.
  • Ensures proper "put away" of all equipment, supplies, and tools.
  • Communicates professionally with the public.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Passes pre-employment drug testing and submits to periodic drug testing as required by applicable laws.
  • May be required to work weekends or a variety of shifts.
  • Subject to emergency call-in.
  • Ability to operate a dump truck, tractor, and mower.
  • Follows oral and written instructions.
  • Operates various equipment, including riding and farm tractors with PTO implements, rubber tire loaders, dump and flat-bed trucks, snow plows, salt spreaders, mowers, hand and power tools, and vehicles in a manner consistent with safety principles.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment with both standard and automatic transmissions.
  • Accurately documents and maintains simple records and logs as well as brief reports.
  • Reads and applies instructions.
  • Communicates effectively verbally.
  • Effectively welcomes and embraces differences among employees and citizens.
  • Performs effectively as a member of a team in carrying out the City's stated mission and philosophy.
  • Presents an overall professional image.
  • Deals effectively and courteously with associates and the general public.
  • Performs essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of self or others.
  • Must have a valid Drivers' License or must take and pass, at minimum, the written portion of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) exam (permit) within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain a class "B" CDL within the 6-month probationary period.

Physical Requirements

  • Normal physical mobility: movement from place to place on the job, considering distance and speed.
  • Normal physical agility: ability to maneuver body while in place.
  • Normal physical strength to handle routine office materials and tools.
  • Normal physical strength to handle 50 lb. objects, considering frequency.
  • Average endurance and dexterity of hands and fingers.
  • Normal physical balance: ability to maintain balance and physical control.
  • Coordination, including eye/hand, hand/foot, etc.
