About the role

Performs semiskilled work on a variety of construction, maintenance and repair projects; operates equipment in connection with tasks; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Functions

  • Performs a variety of semiskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of assigned facilities including landscape, drain ways, sidewalks, streets, and storm water infrastructure.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains drainage facilities (manholes).
  • Pours and finishes concrete; grades areas, sets forms, and grinds concrete trip hazards.
  • Patches asphalt and grades ditches.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains fences, landscaping, sod, drainage facilities, street signs, walkways, and other public-use areas.
  • Mows and maintains grounds of assigned area and repairs equipment.
  • Assembles and uses small tools and materials required for assigned tasks.
  • Operates dump trucks, tractors, mowers, backhoes, and various other equipment and hand tools in performance of tasks.
  • Responds to emergency call-back work after hours and performs on-call duties on a rotating basis.
  • Serves as essential personnel during special events, natural or man-made disasters, and emergencies.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Requires three (3) months of experience in construction, street maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, or closely-related experience.
  • Requires a valid driver license (must obtain Florida driver license within 30 days of employment) and must maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Maintenance Workers with a Class B CDL may be eligible for a CDL Incentive if needed for department operations.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Special Requirements

  • Must be able to work on-call as needed and determined by department (this applies to regular employees on the City of Oviedo's payroll).

Progressive Promotional Program

Internal candidates become eligible for a progressive promotion to a Maintenance Worker II position should they meet the following eligibility criteria: possession of a High School diploma or GED, two (2) years of experience as a Maintenance Worker I with the City of Oviedo, and an overall Performance Evaluation Score of at least Satisfactory (2.0) on the two previous Performance Evaluations. Eligibility is also contingent on the internal candidate having received no more than one (1) formal written reprimand during the previous two years of service. Eligible internal candidates must obtain a CDL within twelve (12) months of the progressive promotion. Failure to obtain CDL within twelve (12) months will result in the employee returning to the position and pay of previous job assignment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
  • Skill in the use of equipment to which assigned.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift heavy articles and perform any essential job tasks in a quick and efficient manner.
  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
  • Ability to work varied shifts according to the needs of the department.
