Maintenance Worker

This is a term position with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition at management's discretion.

Pay

$27.42 Per Hour (Step 01) to $31.99 Per Hour (Step 05). First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

Duties

  • Performs basic regular preventative maintenance tasks independently (changing filters, inspection and testing of control valves/dampers, adjusting building automation control parameters)
  • Assists in minor repairs and maintenance of ventilation fans, boilers and chiller equipment
  • Operates and maintains water and wastewater treatment plant systems. Collects water samples in accordance with proper procedures for sample collections as part of facility water and waste water permits
  • Responds to faults in facility operating systems when notified by automated management system during normal business hours and after-hours as part of an after-hours on-call rotation system
  • Performs general grounds maintenance and grounds upkeep, including summer lawn maintenance and winter snow removal
  • Performs minor electrical repairs, including troubleshooting basic electrical circuits, replace light switches, light fixtures and circuit breakers
  • Performs basic plumbing repairs, including replacing faucet and toilet water valves, identifying and repairing water leaks, and maintaining facility water softener systems
  • Performs general maintenance including painting and light carpentry as needed

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

  • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: possess a valid State license, and possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
  • As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year trial period.

This position is being filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority and is open to U.S. citizens and nationals who meet all eligibility requirements, including permanent and exclusive residency within the defined vicinity of the field unit. The defined vicinity for this position is: 75 miles from La Crosse, WI. You must provide proof of residency within the defined vicinity (e.g., mortgage or property deed, lease/rental agreement, utility bill, insurance policy, etc.).

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  • Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment

There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform the basic work of the position without more than normal supervision through experience shown in the written resume and responses to the job-related task statements in this announcement.

Education: There is no substitution of education for experience for Federal Wage System (FWS) positions.

Physical Demands

Work requires frequent work in tiring or uncomfortable positions with very heavy physical effort in performing such tasks as frequently lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds (unassisted), prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling; moving hands, arms, feet, and legs; and climbing are involved. Danger of falling on slippery surfaces and/or high ladders.

Working Conditions

The position necessitates both inside and outside work and exposure to all kinds of weather. The worker is exposed to noise, vibrations, dust, dirt, water, and odors and may be subject to cuts and/or burns. Worker is subject to danger of falling when working on roofs and from scaffolds and ladders.
