About the role
This is a Maintenance Worker position responsible for the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. The incumbent also performs preventive and routine maintenance on cemetery equipment.
Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities.
- Facilitates assessments, inspections, maintenance and/or repairs of buildings, structures, utilities, and other facilities.
- Ensures that facilities, roads, sidewalks, and other structural areas are consistently maintained and in good condition.
- Trades performed include, but not limited to building maintenance, construction, fabrication, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, fencing, sheet metal, masonry, concrete, painting, and HVAC (minor repairs and tests).
- Utilizes hand tools, power tools, best practices and operates a variety of small and heavy equipment.
- Maintains individual records, enters dates of spot-checks, conditions observed and deficiencies.
- Maintains a supply inventory to ensure operational readiness for the facility.
- Prepares detailed estimates for repairs of deficiencies, projects, work and maintains work order records.
- Performs duties in a manner that remains in compliance with work measurement standards, and as provided by supervisors.
- Plans and carries out work assignments according to preventative maintenance schedules.
- May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends.
- May be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery.
- May be required to work emergency overtime work when called back to the facility.
- Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year.

Qualifications
- To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/15/2026.
- Candidates must demonstrate the potential to perform a broad range of building and maintenance trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, masonry, pest control, asphalt repairs, and related tasks.
- This includes conducting repair and preventive maintenance of irrigation systems, buildings, structures, facilities, and utilities using hand and power tools.
- Applicants should show proficiency in at least two of these trades through work, training, or other relevant activities.
- Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

- Must be able to lift weights up to 50 lbs occasionally.
- Must be exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 dBA for up to eight (8) hours per day.
- Must be exposed to the sun, noise, extreme heat, and humidity, cold, snow, rain, wind, and is subject to dirt, dust, fumes (from motor and exhaust) mud, and water.
- Must be exposed to areas where pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizers are applied.
- Must be exposed to injury from mishaps that may be involved in the operation of grounds maintenance equipment.
