Maintenance Trainee Rail Car C

This job opening is being used to fill current and future vacant positions in this classification at various shifts, locations, and assigned days off. Selection is based on fitness and ability, with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide, and external candidates, respectively.

About the role

The Maintenance Trainee, Rail Car participates in the WMATA Technical Skills Program (TSP), a two-year developmental training program in Rail Car Maintenance (CMNT). The trainee progresses through four training Levels consisting of classroom and on-the-job training. Upon graduation, the trainee will be placed into a job assignment as a Mechanic, grade C within CMNT, performing responsibilities under the supervision of management and TSP "Mentor" mechanics.

Responsibilities

• Attends formal training classes related to basic, intermediate, and advanced rapid transit rail car vehicle maintenance.
• Develops skills in the maintenance, inspection, repair, removal, installation, troubleshooting, testing, and calibration of WMATA rail cars and equipment.
• Under direct oversight of journey-level mechanics, uses hand tools, power tools, and test equipment to inspect, diagnose, and repair WMATA rail car malfunctions in accordance with safety and maintenance procedures.
• Completes documentation and reports associated with the operation and maintenance of WMATA rail car vehicles and training requirements.
• Assists supervisors and mechanical staff in emergencies (e.g., securing equipment, fire/life/safety, snow emergencies) according to established safety practices.
• Maintains awareness of and accountability for safety policies and procedures, promoting a positive safety culture.

Requirements

Knowledge

• Mechanical, electrical, or electronic theory and application.

Skills

• Use of basic electrical, mechanical, or electronic tools.
• Reading comprehension, basic arithmetic, and trade skills.

Abilities

• Successfully complete all required formal, safety, and on-the-job training while complying with safety and maintenance rules.
• Communicate professionally and effectively; interact courteously and respectfully with others.
• Work various hours, days, shifts, and locations.
• Observe and mimic job tasks as demonstrated.

Tools & Equipment

• Hand tools: wrenches, sockets, pliers, screwdrivers.
• Measuring devices: gauges, torque wrenches, calipers, rulers.
• Test equipment: multimeters, temperature probes, portable test units (PTUs).

Qualifications

• High School Diploma with two (2) years of Vocational Training in Electrical, Mechanical, or Electronics.
• In lieu of Vocational Training, one (1) year of related work experience in electrical, mechanical, or electronics may be considered.
• Valid Driver’s License.

Upon achieving 1,000 hours at a particular grade level (Grades D, C, B, A, and AA), advancement to the next grade is possible if the incumbent has passed required tests, acquired certifications, and met performance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or vocational/technical school degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Electronics.
