About the Role

The City of Greeley is seeking a Maintenance Technician or Water Systems Technician I–IV to join the Reservoirs team, reporting to the Reservoir Supervisor. This role involves operating, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and installing the City’s potable water storage and transmission infrastructure to ensure safe and reliable drinking water delivery.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and maintain treated water reservoirs, screens, seals, sodium hypochlorite feed systems, air/vacuum valves, water system valves, transmission lines, and related infrastructure.
• Monitor water quality parameters, including free chlorine residual and pH, using handheld analyzers, and comply with CDPHE Regulation 11, storage tank requirements, and City policies.
• Support routine and emergency repairs throughout the transmission and distribution system.
• Operate vehicles and equipment, including pickup trucks, loaders, and dump trucks, for maintenance and repair activities.
• Maintain accurate work records in CityWorks and assist with materials and inventory management.
• Work in confined spaces, excavation trenches, near live traffic, and in varying weather conditions while following safety procedures.
• Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and respond to after-hours and emergency callouts as needed.
• Perform monthly inspections of potable water storage tanks and reservoirs in accordance with CDPHE requirements and City procedures.
• Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair reservoir components, including screens, seals, valves, and related equipment.
• Climb elevated water storage tanks and structures for inspections, maintenance, and repairs while adhering to fall-protection and safety procedures.
• Operate and monitor the water transmission system, including valves and infrastructure, to maintain water flow and system reliability.
• Monitor, inspect, maintain, and adjust sodium hypochlorite feed systems to ensure proper disinfection and water quality.
• Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair air/vacuum valves, water system valves, transmission lines, and associated components.
• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance and assist with emergency repairs of potable water reservoirs and distribution infrastructure.
• Safely operate hand and power tools, vehicles, and heavy equipment for maintenance, repair, and construction activities.
• Maintain accurate inspection, maintenance, water quality, and inventory records in CityWorks.
• Assist with materials, equipment, and inventory management for routine and emergency response.
• Perform site cleanup and restoration following maintenance, repair, excavation, and construction activities.
• Coordinate with Water & Sewer staff, contractors, and other City departments to complete maintenance and minimize disruptions.
• Respond to after-hours emergencies, system issues, and urgent repair needs as part of an on-call rotation.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
• Basic knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in utility construction and maintenance.
• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and light-to-heavy equipment.
• Willingness to participate in a rotating on-call schedule and respond to after-hours emergencies within 45 minutes.

Qualifications by Level

• Maintenance Technician: 0–6 months of related experience. Entry-level position with on-the-job training.
• Water Systems Technician I: 1 year of related experience. Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 1 Certification.
• Water Systems Technician II: 2 years of related experience. Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 2 Certification.
• Water Systems Technician III: 3 years of related experience. Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 3 Certification.
• Water Systems Technician IV: 4 years of related experience. Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 4 Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
• Experience in water distribution, utilities, public works, construction, sewer, or street maintenance.
• Mechanical maintenance or repair experience.
• Experience working safely in or around active roadways and traffic control zones.
• Knowledge of confined space entry procedures, excavation safety, and trench safety.
• Experience operating construction or utility maintenance equipment.

Work Environment

• Primarily outdoors throughout the City’s water distribution system, including streets, easements, utility corridors, and construction sites, with occasional indoor work in maintenance shops.
• Exposure to all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, and changing environmental conditions.
• Regular operation of heavy equipment and vehicles, with exposure to loud noise, vibration, dust, fumes, and potentially hazardous materials.
• Work in and around active roadways, construction zones, excavations, confined spaces, and pressurized water distribution infrastructure while following safety procedures and using PPE.
• Exposure to standing water, mud, biological hazards, chemicals, and other environmental contaminants during maintenance and emergency repairs.
• Requires traversing uneven terrain, entering trenches, vaults, valve boxes, and confined spaces, and occasionally working at elevations using ladders or access equipment.
• Participation in an on-call rotation, with potential for extended shifts, overtime, evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency response during water main breaks or severe weather events.

Physical Requirements

• Mobility: Ability to frequently walk, stand, climb, crawl, and navigate uneven terrain, active roadways, trenches, vaults, confined spaces, and other work environments.
• Strength: Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 80 pounds occasionally with assistance.
• Endurance: Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods in varying weather conditions and around active traffic and heavy equipment.
• Dexterity: Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, heavy equipment, and perform tasks requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
• Flexibility: Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and work in confined or awkward positions for maintenance and repair activities.
• Vision and Hearing: Ability to distinguish colors, read gauges, maps, plans, and electronic displays, and hear verbal instructions, alarms, approaching traffic, and equipment.

Travel

Regular local/field-based travel within the county and nearby cities is required. Employees frequently travel to field sites, client locations, or other City buildings. Access to a personal or City fleet vehicle may be required.
