  • Water Systems Tech I: $21.96 - $27.73 hourly
  • Water Systems Tech II: $24.16 - $30.41 hourly
  • Water Systems Tech III: $26.57 - $33.77 hourly
  • Water Systems Tech IV: $29.23 - $36.94 hourly

Full salary ranges:

  • Maintenance Technician: $19.97 - $28.95 hourly
  • Water Systems Tech I: $21.96 - $31.84 hourly
  • Water Systems Tech II: $24.16 - $35.03 hourly
  • Water Systems Tech III: $26.57 - $38.53 hourly
  • Water Systems Tech IV: $29.23 - $42.38 hourly

About the role

The City of Greeley is seeking a Maintenance Technician or Water Systems Technician I–IV to join the Transmission and Distribution Maintenance team within the Water & Sewer Department. This role performs maintenance, inspection, repair, and installation of the City's potable water distribution system to ensure reliable delivery of safe drinking water.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair pressure reducing valves (PRVs), air vacuum valves, fire hydrants, water valves, and water mains
  • Perform valve exercising and complete Colorado 811 utility locates
  • Assist with emergency repairs and routine maintenance throughout the City's transmission and distribution system
  • Install and repair water infrastructure
  • Respond to water main breaks and service interruptions
  • Operate a variety of equipment and maintain work records in CityWorks
  • Assist with inventory management
  • Perform work in confined spaces, excavation trenches, around live traffic, and near heavy equipment while following established safety procedures
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and respond to emergency callouts as needed
  • Investigate customer complaints related to water quality, including color, taste, and odor
  • Flush and clean water valves and fire hydrant lines as part of the annual preventative maintenance program
  • Maintain inventory of materials, equipment, and supplies
  • Perform site cleanup following maintenance and construction activities
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work logs, inventory documentation, and complete work orders in CityWorks

Requirements

Minimum Requirements (All Levels)

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license
  • Basic knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in utility construction and maintenance
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and light-to-heavy equipment
  • Willingness to participate in a rotating on-call schedule
  • Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies within 45 minutes when required

Experience and Certification by Level

  • Maintenance Technician: Zero (0) to six (6) months of related experience. Entry-level position requiring the ability to learn water distribution maintenance practices through on-the-job training.
  • Water Systems Technician I: One (1) year of related experience. Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 1 Certification.
  • Water Systems Technician II: Two (2) years of related experience. Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 2 Certification.
  • Water Systems Technician III: Three (3) years of related experience. Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 3 Certification.
  • Water Systems Technician IV: Four (4) years of related experience. Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 4 Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire
  • Experience in water distribution, utilities, public works, construction, sewer, or street maintenance
  • Mechanical maintenance or repair experience
  • Experience working safely in or around active roadways and traffic control zones
  • Knowledge of confined space entry procedures, excavation safety, and trench safety
  • Experience operating construction or utility maintenance equipment

Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret maps, electrical schematics, technical drawings, and use measuring instruments
  • Ability to learn and apply job-related procedures through training, instruction, and observation
  • Ability to follow established safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Outlook and Teams), CityWorks, and the ability to learn new software and technology
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently using sound judgment while contributing effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism, initiative, adaptability, and work with diverse stakeholders

Schedule

  • Work is performed primarily in the field, with occasional indoor work in maintenance shops and storage facilities
  • Participation in a rotating on-call schedule, including emergency callouts
  • May require extended shifts, overtime, evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency response during water main breaks, service interruptions, severe weather events, and other emergencies

Work Environment

  • Primarily outdoors throughout the City's water distribution system, including streets, easements, utility corridors, construction sites, and water system facilities
  • Exposure to all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, and changing environmental conditions
  • Regularly works around and operates heavy equipment and vehicles, with exposure to loud noise, vibration, dust, fumes, and potentially hazardous materials
  • Performs work in and around active roadways, construction zones, excavations, confined spaces, and pressurized water distribution infrastructure
  • May be exposed to standing water, mud, biological hazards, chemicals used in water system maintenance, and other environmental contaminants
  • Requires traversing uneven terrain, entering trenches, vaults, valve boxes, and confined spaces, and occasionally working at elevations using ladders or other access equipment

Physical Requirements

  • Mobility: Ability to frequently walk, stand, climb, crawl, and navigate uneven terrain, active roadways, traffic control zones, trenches, vaults, confined spaces, and other work environments
  • Strength: Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 80 pounds occasionally with assistance
  • Endurance: Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods in varying weather conditions and around active traffic, heavy equipment, and other environmental hazards
  • Dexterity: Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, heavy equipment, and perform tasks requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
  • Flexibility: Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and work in confined or awkward positions
  • Vision and Hearing: Ability to distinguish colors, read gauges, maps, plans, and electronic displays, and hear verbal instructions, alarms, approaching traffic, equipment, and other surrounding hazards

Travel

  • Regular local/field-based travel within the County and nearby cities
  • Frequent travel to field sites, client locations, or other City buildings
  • Access to a personal or City fleet vehicle may be required
