Description

The City of South Lake Tahoe is recruiting for multiple seasonal Maintenance Technician III to assist with our Streets department. This position will assist with patching, paving, painting, striping, replacing signs, and providing general street maintenance services. A CDL license is preferred but not required. This position is anticipated to start in mid-May and end in early November 2026.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs skilled maintenance, repair and installation work related to street signs.

  • Inspects all signing to locate needed repairs and corrections.

  • Cleans and maintains the City's sign shop, sign truck and related equipment.

  • Performs emergency repairs, as necessary and establishes proper traffic control devices in doing such work.

  • Performs minor adjustments on service equipment; maintains tools and equipment in working order.

  • Customer service and interaction with public

  • Safely operate majority of equipment within the Operations Division's functional areas

  • Reads, interprets, and conveys schematics, drawings, codes, safety notices, SDS

  • Basic knowledge of building and civil codes, Cal-OSHA codes, MUTCD, Cal Trans Standards and specifications, agency permitting procedures, asbestos identification and testing procedures, lead paint identification and testing procedures and all other regulatory codes, policies, and procedures within functional area assigned

  • If assigned to a specific area, may assist with projects being completed outside of assigned area.

  • Safely operates all vehicles, equipment and tools within assigned functional areas

  • Performs layout of striping, signage, ditches, paving, walkways, forms, batter boards and all other lay out work required for providing finishes to meet code compliance

  • Fabrication and installation of signs utilizing sign design equipment and plotters. Material storage and inventory

  • Paints complex traffic control markings such as crosswalks, lane stripes and parking zones on City streets and curbs;

  • Performs paving asset condition assessments and data collection utilizing pavement management inspection criteria.

  • Performs storm water infrastructure asset condition assessments and data collection

  • TMDL testing as assigned.

  • NPDES reporting as assigned

  • Performs vehicle and equipment inspections at beginning of day

  • May respond to emergency incidents involving Public Safety

  • May be responsible for development of basic traffic control plans under supervision

  • Inventory control

  • May act as representative to concessionaires, focus groups, school districts, agencies, user groups, special events etc.

  • May assist in project development including permitting

  • May assist with facility schedules and recreation programming

  • May assist in all other functional areas as assigned

  • Environment: Indoor work to perform record keeping and computer tasks; outdoor work in all types of weather including extreme heat and humidity, cold and rain and snow; work in and around heavy traffic conditions and very loud noise of construction equipment; continuous exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, and vibration from equipment and tools; occasional exposure to hazardous materials and substances including chemicals, blood borne pathogens, and animal bites; positions may require working at heights above the ground, work below ground, and/or in confined spaces.

  • Physical: Incumbents in this class must be in good physical condition and able to exert physical strength for prolonged periods of time. Due to the physical nature of this position, the majority of tasks performed by incumbents involve a combination of two or more simultaneous physical operations requiring but not limited to the following:

  • CONTINUOUS: sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, handling, fingering, and hearing; lifting and carrying of tools and equipment weighing up to 75 lbs.; pushing/pulling of tools and equipment up to 25 lbs.

  • FREQUENT: balancing, crouching and talking; pushing/pulling of tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

  • OCCASIONAL: crawling, smelling; lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling of tools and equipment weighing up to 100 lbs.; lifting and carrying tools and equipment weighing over 100 lbs. with assistance.

  • Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to see work orders and service requests, field conditions, equipment dials and gauges; operate vehicles and equipment; monitor telephone traffic conditions and mix chemicals.

  • Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction; ability to monitor sounds for traffic control and equipment malfunction; hear back-up alarms on trucks and other equipment, telephone and radio transmissions, and calls for assistance from others.

  • Speaking: Communicate in English in person, by phone and radio to communicate with both the public and co-workers.
