About the role

The City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a Maintenance Technician I to perform skilled turf and athletic field maintenance including mowing, weed-eating, edging, leaf mulching, aerating, fertilizing, seeding, dragging and marking.

Responsibilities

  • Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding
  • Prepares fields for game play, including marking and dragging operations
  • Performs tasks such as fertilizer and pesticide application
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, and services the full range of power-driven equipment used in athletic field maintenance and sports turf management
  • Affords assistance with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
  • Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instruction from supervisor
  • Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions
  • Maintains time and material records and prepares simple reports
  • Collaborates with other department operational and technical personnel in the performance of assigned tasks
  • Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • One to three years of experience and/or training in athletic turf maintenance and management or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A Class B Commercial Driver License is preferred but the ability to obtain a Class B CDL learners permit and license within 12 months of hiring is a minimum
  • Possessing a Registered Technician Spraying license, a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification and a Fertilizer Applicator Certification are preferred but the ability to obtain all three within 18 months is required

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and one to three years of experience and/or training in athletic turf maintenance and management or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
