Maintenance Technician I/II

Starting pay: $15.06 per hour (Maintenance Technician I) or $15.81 per hour (Maintenance Technician II). Higher rate recognizes at least 2 years of experience in general construction or building maintenance.

About the role

Under close supervision, performs a variety of general maintenance and repair work for city buildings and facilities to ensure upkeep and safety. Operates vehicles and equipment, maintains tools and materials, and completes work orders and related documentation. The selected candidate’s offer of employment will be contingent upon passing several pre-employment screenings, including an FBI national fingerprint-based background check.

Responsibilities

• Performs general maintenance and repair of city facilities, including carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, heating/air conditioning, and other mechanical work.
• Responds to service calls, completes work orders, and tracks materials used.
• Inspects facilities to identify maintenance needs and communicates repairs to the Maintenance Supervisor.
• Operates and maintains tools and equipment such as power saws, sanders, drills, air compressors, and paint sprayers while using required PPE.
• Participates in minor repairs to equipment, vehicles, tools, and facilities.
• Assembles, disassembles, and moves furniture and other objects.
• Assists with setups and teardowns for special events.
• Maintains records and prepares reports of work performed and materials used.
• May be required to respond after hours, including holidays and weekends, during departmental or city-wide emergencies (e.g., flooding, winter storms).

Maintenance Technician II additional responsibilities

• Assists other departmental personnel in general maintenance, repair of facilities, vehicles, and equipment, including HVAC work.
• Assists with remodeling projects.
• Provides instruction, training, and guidance to new or less experienced maintenance technicians.

Requirements

• High school graduation or equivalent, plus at least 2 years of experience in general construction and/or building maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid Texas driver’s license.
• Knowledge of methods, practices, and equipment used in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, construction, and HVAC repair work.
• Ability to safely operate hand and power tools, estimate materials and labor costs, read blueprints and manuals, and work in adverse conditions.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships, communicate clearly, and operate computers.

Physical demands

• Moderate to strenuous physical activity, including lifting and moving objects up to 100 pounds.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling, crawling, climbing, twisting, and reaching.
• Repetitive motions and use of tools and equipment.
• Ability to see clearly (with or without correction) in close, distant, and peripheral situations, and adjust focus.
• Ability to hear and communicate effectively.

Work environment

• Exposure to outdoor elements, loud noises, vibrations, dust, gases, chemicals, and bacteria.
• Occasional difficult or stressful situations, including sensitive or challenging interactions with employees and the public.
• Adherence to safety standards to avoid personal injury.
• Tedious, exacting work in potentially noisy or distracting environments.

Pay

$15.06 per hour (Maintenance Technician I) or $15.81 per hour (Maintenance Technician II).
