About the role

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for the effective operation, repair, and changeovers of production equipment. The role works with others to achieve factory business objectives of safety, equipment reliability, productivity, customer service, quality, cost, and environmental protection. Key accountabilities include safety compliance, attaining high equipment reliability and uptime, equipment maintenance procedures, data collection, housekeeping, problem solving, and continuous improvement as part of a work team.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventive maintenance (PM) to ensure equipment reliability (15%).
  • Complete work orders as scheduled and documented in SAP in a timely manner (15%).
  • Review equipment instructions, blueprints, electrical, and pneumatic schematics to ascertain test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment, nature of technical problems, and possible solutions (10%).
  • Assist Operations and Engineering teams with root cause analysis to identify reasons for equipment failures and breakdowns (10%).
  • Record test procedures and results, numerical and graphical data, and make recommendations for changes in product or test method (5%).
  • Fabricate machine parts as needed (5%).
  • Work with teams and focus resources, planner scheduler, and ensure correct PMs are in SAP (5%).
  • Maintain spare parts inventory and restock inventory for the plant as needed (5%).
  • Audit work order completion and effectiveness (5%).
  • Train and assist in the changeovers of automated equipment (5%).
  • Accurately and fully complete all regulatory and compliance-related documentation and procedures (5%).
  • Participate in structured group or team activities related to line/area performance improvement (e.g., autonomous maintenance, housekeeping, problem-solving) (5%).
  • Work with operators to support production and transfer skills to Operation Technicians (5%).
  • Understand and comply with Hill’s policies, safety standards, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and Food Safety. Identify and report Food Safety issues to management.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing plant or an Associate’s Degree in a related field.
  • 3+ years of manufacturing experience.
  • Practical knowledge of basic maintenance shop equipment.
  • Problem assessment, problem-solving, and basic math skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills in Google Suite (Gmail, Sheets, Docs, Slides) and Microsoft Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical certificate in an industrial-related field.
  • 1+ years of manufacturing or similar experience with an emphasis in industrial maintenance, mechanics, and electronics.
  • Experience using electronic maintenance work order systems.
  • Previous SAP experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Previous similar manufacturing experience (food, pet food, pharmaceuticals).
  • Ability to work an off-shift work schedule that includes weekends.

Skills

  • Ability to work on 3rd shift.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair operating equipment during production and breakdowns.
  • Review blueprints, project instructions, electrical, and pneumatic schematics during troubleshooting, repair, or project work.
  • Utilize maintenance shop equipment (e.g., drill press, lathe, mill, welding).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to bend, climb, crawl, and work in confined spaces for up to twelve hours per day.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions with temperature ranges from cold to hot and humid.
  • Ability to use hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs on a continual basis.
  • Complete tasks that require working with hands overhead.
  • Use a stand-up or sit-down forklift intermittently for up to twelve hours per day.
  • Type using a computer keyboard intermittently for up to twelve hours per day.
  • Walk unlimited distances each day.
  • Frequently walk up and down multiple levels of steps, multiple times a day, carrying a tool bag, materials, or other supplies that weigh 25 lbs on average.
  • Occasionally climb ladders or ledges with tie-off equipment when required.
  • Frequently bend at the waist 90 degrees and flex at the knees 120 degrees.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment, including hearing, eye, foot, and dust protection.
  • Frequently perform tasks in an environment that contains significant levels of dust.
  • Perceive visual and audible alarms and telephones while wearing hearing protection.
  • Receive and transmit information in person and by telephone communications.

Pay

Salary Range: $28.00 - $33.00 USD per hour. Pay is determined based on experience, qualifications, and location. Salaried employees may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, profit-sharing, and long-term incentives for Executive-level roles.

This position is designated as safety-sensitive due to the high-risk nature of essential duties, including handling hazardous materials, operating heavy machinery, and maintaining equipment where malfunctions could cause severe injury or property damage.
