The Maintenance Technician I supports the safe and efficient operation of the Magnera Augusta facility by performing preventative maintenance, routine equipment repairs, facilities repairs, and troubleshooting under the guidance of senior technicians. This role ensures compliance with safety procedures, maintains accurate maintenance documentation, and helps minimize equipment downtime to support continuous production.
Responsibilities
- Promote and support the highest level of safety, both personally and with others, throughout daily activities.
- Perform a wide range of general maintenance procedures on complex machinery, equipment, and facilities.
- Act as a maintenance leader and resource to production teams during shift rotations, serving as the primary person responsible for plant maintenance.
- Answer service calls, including occasional off-shift emergency breakdowns.
- Diagnose causes of malfunctions, make necessary repairs and adjustments, repair or replace defective parts, and reassemble and adjust equipment to proper operating condition.
- Provide effective troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of both electrical and mechanical systems.
- Train and instruct operating personnel in the basic theory of operation and maintenance of production and facilities equipment.
- Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition, observing prescribed safety precautions.
- Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining preventive and predictive maintenance systems to ensure equipment reliability and support facilities.
- Work cooperatively with peers to ensure coverage for overtime and vacation relief.
- Maintain daily maintenance systems, storeroom, and inventory, including strict adherence to purchasing and inventory control systems.
- Understand and follow storeroom checkout and request systems, ensuring inventory accuracy.
- Maintain the maintenance documentation system, adhering to all document control procedures.
- Participate in precision, preventive, and predictive maintenance efforts such as alignment, balancing, lubrication, oil analysis, inspections, calibration, and adjustments.
- Engage in root-cause analysis, adhering to all related procedures, including handling failed parts.
- Use and adhere to plant CMMS (Maximo) for work order completion, task handling, and follow-up work orders.
- Practice line clearance after performing maintenance.
- Perform similar or related duties as requested and work overtime as scheduled for emergency breakdowns or business needs.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required; formalized training/certification is a plus.
- 2+ years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment is preferred.
Skills
- Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Ability to use hand tools, diagnostic instruments, and industrial maintenance equipment. Proficiency with reading and interpreting technical diagrams, blueprints, and equipment manuals.
- Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting: Rapid identification and resolution of equipment malfunctions. Root cause analysis for recurring maintenance issues.
- Preventive Maintenance Knowledge: Understanding of preventive/predictive maintenance schedules and best practices. Experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems).
- Communication Skills: Clear and effective communication with peers, supervisors, and cross-functional teams. Ability to write detailed reports and update maintenance records.
- Adaptability & Flexibility: Capable of adjusting to shifting priorities and responding to unplanned breakdowns. Ability to work on various types of equipment and adjust methods as needed.
- Teamwork & Collaboration: Works effectively within a team to achieve common maintenance and production goals. Willing to assist others and share knowledge.
Working Conditions
- Industrial manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, vibrations, and moving mechanical parts.
- Varying temperatures (hot or cold depending on the facility and season).
- Occasional exposure to oils, greases, and industrial chemicals.
- Frequent work near high-speed equipment and in confined or elevated spaces.
- Use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as safety glasses, steel-toed boots, gloves, ear protection, and hard hats.
Physical Demands
- Frequent standing, walking, and climbing ladders or stairs for extended periods.
- Bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching to access equipment.
- Lifting or moving objects up to 50 lbs.; occasional assistance for heavier loads.
- Fine motor skills and manual dexterity for handling tools, parts, and precision work.
- Visual acuity and color vision sufficient to perform diagnostics and inspections.
- Ability to work in awkward or tight spaces and at heights, sometimes using scaffolding or lifts.
Health & Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all workplace safety rules, procedures, and regulations, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and machine guarding.
- Use appropriate PPE at all times and report damaged or missing safety equipment.
- Identify and report hazards or unsafe conditions to the supervisor or safety department immediately.
- Participate in safety audits, inspections, and incident investigations as required.
- Support and participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance workplace safety and equipment reliability.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas to reduce the risk of accidents or contamination.
- Ensure all maintenance tasks are performed in accordance with environmental and occupational health standards.
