Maintenance Supervisor

About the Role

Supervises and coordinates the activities of colleagues engaged in maintaining the efficient operation of the ammonia refrigeration system, fire protection systems, HVAC systems, warehouse and dock equipment, material handling equipment, and storage racking. Oversees the upkeep of building components and grounds to promote safe, efficient, and optimal utilization of facilities, equipment, and personnel. Manages colleagues and external contractors responsible for sanitation and cleanliness to ensure food safety compliance and regulatory requirements are met. This is a hands-on role requiring active participation in maintenance tasks, including using tools, troubleshooting issues, and completing repairs.

Responsibilities

• Hands-on environment: personally complete repairs and maintenance tasks.
• Manage building maintenance for operations and office areas.
• Develop and implement procedures for preventative, corrective, and emergency maintenance for ammonia refrigeration systems, HVAC, fire protection, material handling equipment, storage racking, dock, and warehouse equipment.
• Monitor preventive maintenance logs and checklists as required/scheduled.
• Schedule and monitor work of outside contractors as needed.
• Requisition tools, equipment, and supplies.
• Inspect completed work for conformance to blueprints, specifications, and standards.
• Ensure appearance, maintenance, and security of warehouse and equipment.
• Provide direction, monitor, and maintain sanitation programs to meet industry standards and compliance.
• Maintain ePSM to ensure PSM tasks are scheduled and completed in a timely manner.
• Maintain maintenance software to ensure work orders are assigned and completed promptly.
• Establish and adjust work procedures and schedules for sanitation and facilities colleagues.
• Coordinate services of cleaning contractors.
• Maintain effective and timely interdepartmental communications.
• Coordinate with all operations areas to maintain proper and efficient workflow processes and scheduling.
• Provide input for department budget preparation and adhere to approved budgetary plans.
• Foster an environment that encourages colleague involvement, quality work, and leadership for mutual benefit.
• Ensure all required colleague records, evaluations, and documentation are filed accurately and confidentially.
• Monitor and evaluate colleagues’ work on an ongoing basis to coach and address performance.
• Provide direction, leadership, and communication to assigned colleagues and management.
• Act as a problem solver for colleague relation issues and department needs.
• Enforce all safety rules to eliminate accidents and injuries.
• Support safety efforts by participating on the safety committee and resolving safety issues.
• Report any unfixable or unsafe issues to supervisor.
• Enforce lock out/tag out procedures as required.
• Communicate and reinforce policies and procedures, including the Coach Card Program and safe work practices.
• Plan and schedule coverage for vacations, holidays, workers' compensation, and other absences.
• Coordinate personnel to accomplish all maintenance activities.
• Plan and manage daily staffing levels to align labor resources with operational needs.
• Assist in performing maintenance activities, including corrective and preventative maintenance as needed.
• Maintain effective working relationships between maintenance and operations departments.
• Understand and comply with all applicable company policies (e.g., attendance, Code of Business Conduct & Ethics, Associate Handbook).
• Comply with all applicable state/federal laws, regulations, and policies (e.g., OSHA, HACCP).
• Support food safety policies, standard operating procedures, and prerequisite food safety control programs.
• Accept additional responsibilities or special projects as requested.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Provide direction and leadership for up to twenty maintenance and sanitation colleagues.
• Communicate status and issues to management in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
• Determine and provide training and development for maintenance staff as needed.
• Assist in personnel recruitment to fulfill maintenance staffing requirements.
• Conduct annual colleague performance evaluations for immediate subordinates.
• Provide ongoing feedback on subordinate and department performance.
• Administer corrective action to address negative colleague behaviors when appropriate.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to plan, organize work and time, analyze and disseminate numerical data, follow policies and procedures, and solve problems.
• Basic math skills and computer knowledge.
• Must pass a functional capacity test.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university preferred, or five years of maintenance-related experience/training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Four years of experience in maintenance at the supervisory level, specifically in ammonia refrigeration, preferred.
• Mechanical aptitude and understanding of facilities equipment and systems.
• Considerable knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems operations and maintenance requirements.
• Electrical knowledge required; energy management system knowledge preferred.
• Completion of a supervisory training program required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

• Certification on material handling equipment required, or ability to become certified.
• Electrical and refrigeration license or certificate preferred.
• Required to complete Ammonia Refrigeration Operator II certification.
